Saw this as part of a response to another suggestion:

......................I would be in favor of getting an empty bottle BACK into your inventory each time you gulp down an ale, or drink a potion.
This spurned another idea.
If a person keeps the vial or bottle after drinking it's contents, the item could be used two ways:
1.) empty bottle for brewing
2.) as a grenade item: Caltrops (broken glass on the floor)
I know you can't have a grenade item that is also an empty bottle, but perhaps based on the size, it could be scripted to place the appropriate item type.
Larger bottles could be used as caltrops, while smaller vials could be reused as brewing bottles.
Not sure what the feeling is on this, or even if it's possible to script (might even be more pain than it's worth).
But it's a thought that occurred.

Can be scripted, not sure it's desirable. Magical potions are out of the question, and I'm not sold on the idea of getting caltrops for the price of a Free Drink.

I have always understood/imagined that a craftable potion bottle is more than just an empty liquid container: some alchemical, non magical ingredients, reactives, and whatnot. When you but a potion bottle from a merchant, you are buying all these, or perhaps a primed, semi-magical container.
When you drink a potion, you end up with a normal, common bottle or vial, good for nothing, and discarded.
I am against reusable potion bottles, unless there is some balancing mechanism, like an alchemical lab or cauldron where you can "re-prime" the used bottle.
Regarding the use of broken bottles as caltrops... Caltrops are a weapon made up of two (or more) sharp nails or spines arranged in such a manner that one of them always points upward from a stable base (for example, a tetrahedron). Also, they need to be made of some material capable of piercing hard leather or metal boot's soles. This requires some crafting ability, and proper materials.
Again, I imagine that is commonplace in Lower to walk over broken shards of glass, bones and other litter, or anywhere in the Underdark over sharp pebbles and jagged stones, without any harm to protected feet.

Or leave it up so that people wondering if it has been suggested before, could have a resource.

I am in favor of getting an empty bottle back, you can use those for such awesome things, (Like collecting spider venom, human blood, rat blood, etc...water for testing for toxins, that kinda thing) people underestimate the potential of EMPTY BOTTLE POWER.

I am for empty bottle power, as someone could try the following: making a living simply collecting spring water, create a vase by putting some flowers in it, collecting rock dust for surveying mines, a container for a shrunken head, use in creation of holy water by clerics, or as something to break on that rowdy loudmouthed half-orc's head in the crone (touch daze attack?).

Snoteye made clear that the reason this will not be implemented was due to the cost balance of crafting potions.
Its time spent that the Dms could be doing something else. If someone was feeling particularly motivated it could be cool to collect old bottles and use them for things. But really its not that big of a deal, since if you're in a need of a bottle for something while a DM is around all you have to do is just emote dumping out the potion and scooping what ever it is up.

The empty jars could be used to capture wisp and stick in the bottle for a light source! Seriously though, I could go for empty bottles like back on Zelda: Orcana of Time or whatever. Swing either way.
As for caltrops? Broken glass + boots = crunch noise... that's bout it. Be cool if folks were bare-footed.
