Council of Sanctuary

Council of Sanctuary,

Do you realize that I have under my control an unliving force that could, with little effort, destroy your town? I assure you, that is the absolute truth.

Of course, I have no interest in doing that, and never have. Truthfully, my greatest goal has always been to acquire knowledge, but somewhere along the way after defeating an assassin and practicing the animation of the dead, it was decreed that I was a great enemy of Sanctuary. Your soldiers and bountyhunters came after me, and time and time again I repelled their efforts with casual force, mercifully letting them live, yet proving to all just how weak the living are when faced with those who study the necromantic arts. I suppose that has been infuriating to you.

I am afraid that I have given up on the political organizations of Sanctuary. It is clear none of you are interested in the truth of how things really are, and instead just wish to exert power mindlessly. Well, I do have a single purpose for writing. And that is to assure you that the man most recently executed for "associating" with myself was in no way guilty of what he was accused.

[A letter is left at The Shop of Undeath]

Aleczumberzeil te Esoterotept,

I fully realize James Lysik was an innocent man, if I were the judge, he would have been let off free. The trial was a farce, with evidence weaker than a newly born babe, made to sound as strong as a full grown orc.

With that in mind, I will humbly request that you stay the hell away from Sanctuary and never return. I do not want any more innocent men and friends to die at the Watch's hands for their own senseless purposes. Most of my fellows are blinded by their need for revenge, and disgust at what you do; this hatred will continue to condemn men to death, both innocent and guilty, for presumably attempting to learn what you know. And yes, I admit it is indeed a cruel thing for a teacher and scholar's disciples to be executed for merely wanting to learn, but then, the decision was never mine.

Despite what you might have intended in the beginning, your path has been one leaving death, chaos and sorrow. Isom's death closed a path to the surface, Lysik's death promises future destruction and death in retribution, Merrickson's death has put a more thicker, stubborn and unyielding man in a place of power and Yvonne's association with you has condemned an entire benign organisation in the eyes of many.

It is has been about time you realized you will never have the support of Sanctuary proper, regardless of whether it is deserved or not. A few members of Lower Sanctuary's gangs may support you loosely, but your association with them will only ensure they are kicked down into the dirt, never to arise again with, the blade of a Watchman or assassin in their bowels.

Why do you continue to linger about Dunwarren? We both know you have the resources to start your own settlement anywhere in the Underdark. Those that want to learn will come to you, and you will be a safe enough distance from the Watch and Spellguard, to not suffer further retribution. Or merely disappear quietly, and work on becoming fully unliving. It will give you near an eternity to teach whoever will listen to you.

I know your hand has stopped at least one major threat to Sanctuary, and you have my thanks, at least for that. I know an undead army would be a major asset to Sanctuary, and stop many lives being needlessly lost. And I know that in your own way, you are well meaning. But the people will never love you, they will never accept you, and they will always mistrust you. Too many blows have been dealt for peace, and necromancy's reputation is too firmly set, and if this continues, it will only end with you killing half the population until they submit, or your head spiked on a pole in the inbetween, next to Lysik's. It is futile and pointless, as was the Council declaring you an enemy of Sanctuary.

I doubt my words here will dissuade you and it is an unfortunate thing indeed that so many good men have died in such vain. All I ask is that you consider my request, and perhaps stop, before this gets even more ugly. Councillor Jacelyn Cheval
