A letter to the Spellguard Order

Venerable members of the Spellguard,

I request information on the wards on the Town Hall. Is there magic to stop intruders magically appearing in the Council hall?

It is merely a security concern that has occured to me.

Councillor Jacelyn Cheval

[Another note is sent with the addition of...]

The information would be prefered sooner, rather than later.

Yes, there is. The council does not need to know the full extent of the protections upon the Town Hall. The fewer people that know about them the better. Secrecy will keep them from being circumvented.

-- Operative Miller

Venerable members of the Spellguard,

Councillor Grigorovich informs me you used to be able to scry the location of Council Keys and Togas. There was a recent announcement a few days back regarding the sale of (presumably), Councillor Merrickson's Toga and Keys for 5000 gold. If you can scry the location of the items, we would appreciate an Agent being sent to arrest the holder/s.

Also, perhaps the Order can indulge my curiosity. I have taken to looking through past reports on the more interesting developments in the past two years, but the Council only has limited information, to my sadness. If the Spellguard Order could send me all the confidential and secret information they have on the cultists of Moander in Sanctuary, and his lizard worshipers in Sslas'teesh, I would be greatly appreciative. This may just convince me of the Order's dedication to the Council, enough so that I would think it warranted a transfer of discretionary funds to the Spellguard Budget to do as they see fit in their trustworthy wisdom.

I would however expect the information to be reliable, provided to me very soon, and to be from all levels of the Order. You could hold some information from me, but I may know more than the Council records give, and be saddened at the mistrust placed in me.

The records would be for my own personal reading, rest assured, and any mention of Agent assassination of cultists would be met with my approval, rather than concern. It is hardly a well hidden fact the Order swats away perceived pests when it can suffer no repercussions for it. But I do not care about that, by all means put "Agent Hood kissed the cultist, and then wiped the saliva from his jacket, and took the man's body into the Tower to be further kissed with a dissection knife" when it comes to those parts.

Councillor Jacelyn Cheval

Your thirst for history will not make us dig through our reports. I believe everything to do with that plague, and the invasions of the lizard folk is on record already. We of the Spellguard are quite busy and your vague promises to give us money for favors is frowned upon, and will be reported to Azzam and the rest of the Council of Sanctuary unless you cease your pathetic attempts to force our actions.

From what we can see Councilor Cheval you are an opportunist that garnered Lower Sanctuary's support in your campaign and then failed to assist them in any way shape or form. No, I see not one reason to assist you or squander assets doing menial tasks for you. You are simply a man out to make a small profit off of the power that a council position offers. I'd even presume from your own attempts to buy the Spellguard's aid, that you yourself are perfectly negotiable in what you offer as 'services.' Though being paid to vote the 'right way' is hardly a crime in Sanctuary it is something that many people frown upon.

-- Clerk Wendt

Councilor Merrickson's robes have been traced to the Pissing Crone. Though I assume you would already know that as there was a sending asking buyers to go down and purchase them at that location.

Venerable Order of the Spellguard, Specifically:Clerk Wendt

I am greatly saddened that you perceive my thirst for redundant, trivial information as an attempt to make a small profit. Even if I were the corrupt bastard you seem to think me, who in the Nine Hells would I sell this to? Former Councillor Tyrell? Having looked over the past Council records on the Spellguard Order, I had begun to see the useful role and necessary functions you had played in the town's history and defence. However, being met with this distrust over seemingly inconsequential information, my view of your Order has not been helped.

As to my campaign, my promise to Lower Sanctuary was simple, to give my best efforts in keeping Upper Sanctuary out of what is perceived to be the Lower Sanctuary area, from the east, to the border of the Canal Ward, and I am engaging in talks with the Illmateran priest Lucius Westmore about assisting his restoration efforts. As to the Seekers, they have no desire to reunite with Sanctuary, and so my promise to them cannot be helped. Unless you are encouraging me to press the issue of renaming Bhast Road to Ivlysar Avenue, instead of spending my time on more important issues, I see no reason for you calling me an opportunist. I ask you, what can I possibly gain from this information?

This response is the kind of mistrust that I feared. In a matter I find ironic, I suggest you have a word with your Agents before you imply I am corruptable. Some of your men have already attempted to bribe me to vote in the Order's favour and so far I have not done so. Which leads me to presume your Order is perfectly negotiable in what you offer as 'services'.

You have only confirmed my doubts about your Order. The Spellguard is far too overly clandestine in nature, hiding its information, activities and dealings from the Council out of an unfounded paranoia, regardless of how trivial that information might be.

One of the reasons for my previous letter was to gage whether or not the Order was ready to have a greater role in Sanctuary's defence, with bolstered funds going towards this, due to its exceptional work in recent times, I stated as much. But judging from this absurd letter it is cleary not. It is not a matter of favours, rather than trust, I would expect this tone of letter to a known assassin requesting information on how to infiltrate Commander Simms' quarters. As you do not seem to trust a Councillor of Sanctuary with safe, uncondemning, and closed reports on events that occured a year or so ago, I will retain my somewhat cynical view on your Order until such a time that you actually cooperate with a reasonable damn request.

Also, your assumptions about my nature I find sickening. I have worked hard into the early hours of what would be considered the morning, during my term in Council to try and cut threats before they bloom and see the entire city prosper. So by all means, put your conspiracy theories up to my fellows and the Sheriff Azzam, you will in all likelihood be scorned. The theory would be as weak as the claims some men make that Melinda Bresley was a vampire preying on the blood of young girls to retain her beauty into middle age. I suggest you learn some tact, sir, for your nature has made me loose patience and some of my own. I can only hope that not all members of your organisation are as blunt as you, for the sake of the entire town.

Additional: You seem to imply that the Council squanders assets by funding your Order? If this is true, I will try to remedy our mistake immediately.

Good day, sir Councillor Jacelyn Cheval

P.S. Overseer Hersher, your swift reply was appreciated. I assume the robes are still in that location? Assuming the sending was made through the Upper Sanctuary sending system, why was not the woman in question quickly subdued and arrested?

If you thought that asking the Spellguard Order for "redundant" and "trivial" (your words, apparently) information was an accurate test of our willingness to work with the Council then I'm afraid you are incompetent. I'm but a lowly clerk so I don't really know how my opinion matters. Yet, if I were a high and mighty councilor I would eagerly wish to cement relationships with my defenders. Certainly things can be smoothed over if you wish to stop by the Spellguard Tower and the two of us can have a chat.
