RP vs Practical thinking

What is this about? Let me explain.

Since I have taken up serving drinks and food and whatever else will please ya to player characters and charge them money for that I feel kind of bad asking them for their hard earned cash to buy something that is, all RP aside, rather 'useless'. (I think alcohol in NWN ever only served as reagent in some recipes, I could be wrong though).

What I want to know from you, the playerbase, is the following:

Do you think that way, and find it annoying being asked to purchase food and drinks even though they're actually NOT needed here in order to sustain you..

.. or do you appreciate the little bit of RP that comes with it and only usually costs a pittance, anyway?

I myself, if I was on your end of the stick, would probably go for option number two. And since lots of peope are very generous with the tips, I feel most think the same way. But still, I'd like to know what the general opinion is out there. Be honest.

Linelle food and whatever else will please ya to player characters and charge them money for that .

This statement alone opens up endless RP avenues

RP.

Whose cares about a few gold either way.

And em... ICly it would be practical to buy food and drinks. So eh, both!

Don't complain about the smell of the pig farm while eating a ham sandwich. Rp all you want.

Although I turned down your offer this afternoon that was for an IC reason, not because I thought it was pointless.

OOC I think you serving drinks in the Crone is a great idea.

My recent character started buying food and drink from Rak at the bar in the Last Stand - I invited people to join me, going through the process of eating a meal and drinking...

My ulterior motive here was to: 1. start a conversation about Life in the Underdark, and

2. Involve those players who might wander by to rent a room, or visit an NPC for a quest, or use the facilities, table, chairs, fireplaces, to talk.

3. Also creates the ambience of walking into a bar and seeing people interacting. Presents players with more choices for interaction if they overhear a conversation in a relatively non-threatening environment.

I've had some great RP opportunities come out of this.

If someone employed at the bar actually came and served me personally, I would take the opportunity to buy (or at least interact).

If anything , coin used in-game for buying seemingly trivial items can unfold a chain of events that lead to amazing RP.

Watching Frum Highill sell his wares in the Rock Bottom and the Bazaar, and Ian Shargen dance and sing extremely badly, in-game, really showed me how the 'triviality of everydayness' is far from trivial.

Eating and drinking is good. I would buy food from you, but Zeezin usually goes into the Sewers to eat rats when he's hungry.

I look forward to seeing you scamper around serving people. It gives the crone a -real- ambiance and I find it great.

Yeah, it's awesome. I like that the Crone has employees that are always around now. It's turned it into quite the hang-out.

Kyle goes down to buy food there but i can assure you it's not for the food... *smiles

Well, thaks for al that, it's really nice to hear what the community thinks. Somnis, in your case you chose to buy the nutrition though, I kind of bug people to buy them. (Another thought was that you could, for the sake of RP, just do how kids do when making sandcake, simply pretend (read: RP) to eat while actually not having any actual food or drinks items in your pack/on the table in front of you.)

But aaanyway, of course I don't take it personal when someone doesn't want to buy anything, and yeah, I did figure it was for IC reasons, and that always goes first.

While it might not look that way, I also have immense fun doing it.

These things add a nice ambiance.

Another example is Regnak the dwarf who guards/guarded the Upper gate. He would question people who came through about what they were doing and ask, or warn them about perils in the area.

Unfortunately standing there without anybody to interact with for long periods of time can't have been too exciting for that player, but from my end it added a lot of flavor.

The Crone is an outstanding place to be right now, in no small part because you're making it such an interesting place.

RP all the way. Keep up the good work.

You can't talk like that, Mikhail. If you do, Kyle's marriage will be over before it's even begun. We can't be having that!

You're right it wasn't too fun when no one was going in/out, but when some people were doing so it was immense fun harassing them. I remember locking the gate in the was of one of Mole's characters because she would not tell Regnak where she was going. >:)

Back on topic: I'd choose the rp over the gold any time.

I told you before and I'll tell you again then.

This is really awesome. It makes the Crone feel alive.

It warms Canzah's heart to see the Crone full of life again.

If a waitress walks up to me in a bar, and asks me what I want to drink, and I tell her to 'bugger off' or anything like that, I'd:

A) Be kicked out

or

B) Have the waitress ask me what, exactly, I am doing in a bar if I'm not there to drink.

What I mean by saying this is, regardless of whether ingesting alcohol has any mechanical benefits to your character, it's -absolutely- IC for you to -bug- people to buy drinks. They are, after all, in your -bar-.

Halfbrood You can't talk like that, Mikhail. If you do, Kyle's marriage will be over before it's even begun. We can't be having that!

He looks but doesn't touch. Besides i think it creates great opportunities i mean rak can then try and pay her off from Cyrus it could start a bidding war between the two inns that then leads to a cold war of epic proportions.

Indeed! It is neat to see this kind of thing happening.

I concur.

Women are not items to be bought and sold, Mikhail. How you get in with all these hot chicks is beyond me!

Oh...

... ...

Eminence Gris makes a damn good point. I'm totally convinced.

I really like having a barmaid character in the Crone, it helps make that cool place come even more alive.

I remember when there was a barmaid in the rock bottom that was cool, it's the same kind of thing here... Better interaction rather than just talking to a non possesed NPC.

In fact, I'm deliberately building up a tab with Grado to see how long it'll keep before the Crone changes management (again).

It's awesome. Really. Having a serving wench you can order to bring more beer is great, especially if she is scantily clad with high CHA.

Hm. I need to frequent Lower more often.

Hells. I need to log-in more often!

Sounds great Linelle!

Not exactly maxed charisma, but definitely not low. I've done a character sketch with my own take on the garments I was given and everyone who wants to get a better impression of the character's looks may click here.

Wow, sounds like hte Crone is picking up. good thing I have two PC who'll frequent there. Look forward to seeing ya'll!!
