Quick Question to the DMs....
Does a PC have to choose a diety for his cleric character to get spells? And if so, do you have to choose the domains that are listed in the Diety description?
IOW, if a dwarven cleric has Moradin as his diety, and trickery is not one of Moradin's listed domains, can the player choose it for his character?
Also, what domains do you peeps think are the best in this setting?
Seems like healing is a durn good choice with the scarcity of healing potions/herbs in treasure caches.
Any others leap out? Invis. seems pretty huge in the Underdark, but a bit harder to role play Trickery as a cleric character....

You need a valid deity, alignment, and domains.
The info for each deity is on the deity info forum, believe it or not.

I would offer that since this is an rp heavy server don't so much think about which domains would be best for the server environment and more about why those domains and why that particualr diety for your character. The more background you have the richer your character will be, the richer your character the more successfull you will be in portraying your character. Good character portrayal in the end will get you more here than that extra spell or that sweet clerical domain power, and you'll have a well developed character who you like to play for the long run to boot.

Thanks Beggar.
Nice to see someone give an intelligent answer to a valid question by a newcomer.
It's much more productive than being a smartass.

Oh Dear... did you just call a DM a smart ass?
I think something nasty might sneak up on you out of the dark real soon, and it won't matter which domain you have....

Technically, I didn't actually call him a smartass...
To be honest I'm surprised to see that it's a DM. I'd expect a DM type to answer a question from a new player without disparaging them. I legitamately wanted to know if the Domains should jive with their chosen Diety's or if it was up to your own judgement.
Obviously I'm trying to gather more info in order to be a better player. Perhaps I over-reacted to someone that is normally perceived as having a wonderful sense of humor....
But it sure seemed like he was busting my balls, so IMO that was an appropriate response. Fight fire with fire, and all that. If he's got a good sense of humor, then it won't bother him.
If it does bother him, he probably shouldn't have made the comment because he should have realized that some people would respond in like fashion.
And if there are DMs in this group that would become offended so easily and take it out on someone's character, then I'd rather know that now before I spend my time into creating and playing a character.
Since I had researched the dieties before and noticed that very few had one of the domains and none had the two I was interested in, I was wondering what a vet player or DM would say about Domain selection.
If you didn't know those two posters above, which response looked like it came from a DM, and which one did not?

And Metro_Pack, if you didn't intend anything disparaging by your statement, then I apologize for my faulty interpretation.

Also just remember when it comes to a priest if you don't act out that Dogma. You'll find those domain powers and spells vanishing, quickly.

Yeah, there's nothing disparaging there whatsoever. I meant that the specific deity info was on the forum folder on deities. Thanks for all that, though.

If you find you've picked an ivalid combination, don't be afraid to send a tell to another player for help. I spent about 20 minutes tonight helping a new player pick a deity and domains and it was sorta fun.
