I forgot the exact name of it, it's an ethereal, spectral black hound; anyway, I saw it fight some zombies the other day and constantly provoking attacks of opportunity of everything hostile around it. I guess it either needs a creature weapon and/or proficiency with it or the improved unarmed strike feat.
