Maric Jahaer's Arcane Research Notes

*written on the first page, in a painfully straight script (unlike the shaky hand throughout the rest of the book) is the following*

I will love magic for itself.

I will not treat it as a weapon to reshape the world to my will.

True wisdom is knowing when not to use magic.

I will strive to use magic less as my powers develop, for often the threat or promise of its use outstrips its actual performance.

Magic is Art, the Gift of the Lady, and, as I wield it, I am privileged in the extreme.

I will conduct myself humbly, not proudly, while being mindful of this.

I will use the Art deftly and efficiently, not carelessly and recklessly.

I will seek always to learn and create new magic.

*a signature with large loops and shaky lines follows* Thus I swear,

Maric Jahaer

An incantation to protect me from evil First Use Conditions at the time of use: I ran into rats who were practitioners of the Art, manipulating the Weave into baffling those around them. To stop them from assaulting my mind, I called down the protections upon myself. Reflections on the use: While, in the end, the incantation proved unnecessary, I do not consider this use wasteful. As a preventative measure, it was a superb choice, and it did make it harder for their filthy teeth to break into my flesh, as well. One point- if I stay further back from any fighting, I am less likely to get caught in spells that baffle the mind. That is, I think, a much preferable preventative measure.

An incantation to protect me from evil Second Use Conditions at the time of use: Assaulted by a great many filthy, disgusting rats. My companion in armor was almost overwhelmed, and they began to turn their attentions on me, biting and clawing at my flesh. Seeing no other option, I called down the incantation, conjuring the defenses over my body, creating a field of the Weave which make it harder for their teeth to come through, and protected me in case any of them were practitioners, as before. Reflections on the use: Unnecessary, and a product of cowardice and lack of wisdom. Do not put myself into situations where I am forced to make such choices. Prepare mundane methods of defense, and always, always, always use the correct spell for the situation. This was wholly incorrect, wasteful, and foolish.

An incantation to conjure forth armor to defend my body First Use Conditions at the time of use: Assaulted by a great many filthy, disgusting rats. My companion in armor was almost overwhelmed, and they began to turn their attentions on me, biting and clawing at my flesh. Seeing no other option, I called down the incantation, conjuring the defenses over my body, creating a field of the Weave which make it harder for their teeth to come through. Reflections on the use: Sadly, the incantation was not needed, and I cast the spell wastefully. May the Lady forgive my cowardice. Had I been with more than one person, I would not have been frightened into casting the spell unnecessarily, and I would not have wasted it. In the future, do not travel into a possibly dangerous situation with only one companion.

An incantation to conjure forth armor to defend my body Second Use Conditions at the time of use: I was hit several times by hobgoblins, this time, I had three people with me. The incantation had to be used to protect myself. Reflections on the use: I find this spell to be worthless. It passes so quickly that it seems an absolute waste of the weave, tangling it while accomplishing nothing for me. I will use it no more, as it seems the very casting does nothing of import.
An incantation to protect against evil Third Use Conditions at the time of use: Goblins were casting sleep enchantments, and my companions were falling to them at each turn. I enchanted one of them to protect his mind. Reflections on the use: This worked extremely well, as he did not fall to another spell. This incantation seems to work for some time, and it allowed us to make it out alive. It seems that, since others do not have the same strength of mind as I, that this particular abjuration is best suited for use on persons other than myself.
