A dwarf named Nurtle called this a cursed place... Why?
Who is Frederick Bresley, and how did he get out of the underdark? It's called "The Way." He helped form Sanctuary. Why did he form a town if he knew a way out?
"The Sentinal Watches" is scrawled on the rock coming into Sanctuary. What does it mean?
I was told by a man named Lohar (I think) that there is no way out, and that people should remind themselves of that in order to make life more bearable. The "Seekers" have been looking for a way out for a hundred and fifty years.... How is that possible if Bresley found the way out when he founded the city? Oddly enough, even though this man said he didn't believe there was a way out, he was certainly interested in any information on Bresley I had. I should find out why.
Can't cast spells outside of areas marked by the Spellguard. Grey and red tiles. Who are the Spellguard? I'm also supposed to register with them, or I can't cast magic. A crime? Outrageous- where the hells am I?
The city was apparently built by gnomes. The old name was Dunwarren.
A halfling in the Last Stand told me that the drow have a way out of the underdark, but that they guard every step of the way. He also thinks that Bresley's Way is nonsense, and that the only way up is to make a fortune and bribe the drow.
The town has recently had a rebellion. Maybe the Seekers "retreat" into Lower Sanctuary has something to do with this?

I have agreed to work for a man calling himself "Mister Silver" in Lower Sanctuary, selling numbers for a gambling venture. I can hardly say that I trust him, but I will need gold to equip myself and buy an escort out of here and into the sun. He has several others working for him, including a priest of the Maiden of Pain. I will ask that man to pray that the pain in my back makes me stronger-- as long as I have to suffer so, perhaps I can grow from it.
Silver also has a damned persistent woman working for him named Zoe. She took me around on several jobs she had to do, managing to scare me half to death in the process. We both managed to get through them without being much worse for the wear, so I suppose I can do little complaining. If anything, it taught me that I have much to learn before attempting to leave this place. I was forced to cast three spells in the course of the evening- a fact which bothers me greatly. I hope that Mystra can forgive my wastefulness.
I digress. Zoe has proven that she can swing a hammer about well enough to keep me safe, and she has also shown herself to be a friend (or damn adept at manipulation) by giving me several magical trinkets which she had no use for. In return, I promised to teach her of the gods, as she knows nothing of them. Odd, that I can remember those stories, but not the ones who told them. I'll have to find a few about Waukeen now, if I'm to be selling my way out of this cursed place.

Things I must do, before I get wrapped up in this pitiful place and begin to consider it a home. First, I have to meet with these Seekers. One named Orsini answered my note promptly enough, and I hope to have a discussion with him soon. Whether or not it will bear fruit is beyond my vision, but so are many things. I need to know about Bresley, and his escape- and why these blasphemous fools seem to worship him. So many things to ask; I had better organize my mind before any meeting.
I also have yet to register with the Spellguard, which I hope will not get me into trouble. I was told to just "be careful" with my use of the art- what practitioner isn't? The advice was almost insulting, but I suppose I have seen foolish enough behavior that I needn't question it too much. With Tymora's smile, one of these Spellguard Agents will be able to point me to a master, as I can barely see ten seconds into the future, let alone divine my way out of this hell.
I must begin gathering fine crystal and mithral for my divining orb. Hopefully, there will be a master smith to put it together for me, but I'll worry about that in the future. The proper incantations for this device will elude me for some time, but finding a master will help there, I am sure.

I spent a bit of time in the Spellguard Tower reading today, and found some more interesting information. The Seekers have apparently been involved in "political murders". Strange, that an association seeking a way out of the underdark would be so involved in politics that they would resort to murder... The same book indicates that Bresley was murdered, and never actually made it to the surface. It seems- if this book is any indication- that the Spellguard and the Seekers distrust each other. I should find out what the current situation is before making any friendships that might hurt me later.
I also heard a bit of talk today of people heading off to, of all things, guard a merchant caravan. Who in the hells are these people trading with? No one seems to take any mind whatsoever to hide the fact that we are here. All the more reason to try harder to get out, and quickly.
I must find a master soon.

I met an elf today, an odd one. He came to speak with me after I made a sending asking about the graffiti about the Sentinel on the walls near the gate. It turns out that the Sentinels are a group that watches the roads, rather than some mysterious being I first feared. A man named *it seems this was hastily scribbled out* told me all of this. He also answered some of my questions about the Seekers, saying that their former leader of the Seekers was named Ivlysar, an "elfkin," who was almost mayor once. Someone named "Ubel" was going to make him mayor. He was apparently one of the city's founders. He said not to trust the Seekers, or the Spellguard.
He has also scouted a place away from the city, as he believes we will have to soon abandon Sanctuary. He is convinced that the city is doomed. Interesting, because he wears a medallion identifying himself as a government official.
He lead me to New Dunwarren, of all places. From there, he took me ~into~ the machine! He seemed convinced there was something there that was going to destroy Sanctuary. He showed me a place where men had been digging to reach something, something that he was convinced threatened the lives of everyone in the city. An odd day, to say the least.

While sitting in the Last Stand, I met a very somber halfling named Violet. We spoke a bit, and when I told her of my desire to create a crystal orb, she told me that she served the spellguard agent, Petrov, and that she would try to arrange a meeting between the two of us. She then offered to take me to a place where I could collect some old svirfneblin items for my research into the orb. She did a fine job of guarding me from the strange beasts living there, I might add.
I also finally met a Seeker, a very strange man who seemed quite full of himself. He confirmed, without actually saying such, that there is no love lost between that order, the Watch, and the Spellguard. He also claimed that the Seekers are actually looking for a path out of the underdark. I asked directly if they worshiped Bresley as a god. He said no, but that he was more than just a man- whatever that means. It appears there is some odd religious significance to their actions, which could easily mean that *scribbled out*
What choice do I have?
