Ibrandul's Dogma (or part of it)

ogma: Followers of Ibrandul believe that the Underdark is every bit as vital as the surface world, and darkness is its greatest redeeming quality. In a world without light, there is no tedious and inescapable march of day and night to command the lives of intelligent creatures and no end to the variety of shapes and textures to experience tactilely—something which would be lost by merely looking upon them as surface dwellers do. Followers of Ibrandul believe that nothing is good or evil in the dark unless you consider it so, and such value judgments are frivolous.

Initiates to the Enveloping Darkness, as the faith is properly known, are charged: “There is perfect freedom in perfect darkness: independence, individuality, liberty from the judgment of others. Ibrandul protects you and guides you in the dark ways. He drives away those who would do his children harm and from time to time reveals great treasures to those who venture into the depths. Remain steadfast to him, and he will stand by you.”

There you go! Finally, maybe we can get some IBRANDUL PRIESTS ABOUT NOW!

Ibrandul = Mega Win.

Thank you for this.

*hints at maybe adding this to Ibrandul's thingie....*

Hmm, cool.

Cheers Thomas.

As probably the most recent bloody Ibrandulite priest (at about a year ago) can I just point out that you don't know about Shar killing him. Unless you are a very high ranking Sharran, you have no clue. A lot of people metagamed this without even realising they were doing it.

Your kung fu is still weak, grasshopper.

Oh, good find. I was about to post that one myself. Yeah, Ibrandul is actually a pretty awesome deity and it's too bad he doesn't exist anymore.

He's dead! Not non-existent! Moandar anyone?

However, little to no people know that in our setting.

So keep making Clerics of The Dungeon Master.

I want to echo what 9lives has just stated for emphasis. I'll even bold it.

No PC character knows that Ibrandul is dead

This is a closely held secret by Shar, and a very, very select few of the higher ups of her clergy. The run of the mill sharran clergy have only been told not to concern themselves with the Ibrandulites, and so they obey.

For all IG purposes, Ibrandul is NOT DEAD, his clerics (according to everyone) GRANT SPELLS IN HIS NAME. Infact, when they pray and cast, they do it IN HIS NAME. Infact, his church in many regions of the world IS STILL QUITE STRONG.

Only OOCly do you, as a player (not as a character) know this information, becuase you have poisoned your minds with all these things called fantasy setting books and source material.

Hey, DMs:

How about you just change it so that Ibrandul is still alive?

I mean really. That way should any player decide to play an Ibrandulite cleric, and somebody who thinks they know Ibrandul is dead, can legitimately be told: "NOPE! Ibrandul is alive in this setting."

Or somethin'

(and then when it comes up that Ibrandul actually needs to be dead, it's a secret again, and people can be blown away.)

But..

That's lying!

Or...you could just do a thing called roleplay, and roleplay what your character knows. And no more.

The link earlier in this thread is VERY awesome. You may know I never play clerics - this is mostly because I know too little about the gods. But with this link, I have found new confidence. Thank you for it.

Roleplay? Inconceivable!

Unfortunately, two posts on a thread nobody's going to read a month from now, and that half the server probably isn't going to read at all in the first place aren't great for spreading the word that nobody in fact knows that Ibrandul is dead. And unfortunately, no player, no matter how accomplished, can, or probably ever will be able to fully seperate IC and OOC knowledge. And still the problem will remain that not everybody will even be AWARE that there's a difference between the two in this case.

Changing the facts, so that people can even believe OOCly that Ibrandul is dead would actually help resolve this issue, I think.

Besides, what's the point of having a secret like that, if everybody knows it?

Having a PC who actually becomes so prominent in the Church that he might find out that Ibrandul is actually dead would still be like knowing you're getting a surprise party and getting it anyway, except the punch is all watered down and it's full of people you don't even like. That's not a party. That's not a party at all!

I can understand why you might get buggered by the thought that players aren't all perfect practicioners of DOUBLETHINK, but the fact is that we aren't.

Except your own post nullifies the suggestion.

Ibrandul is dead? Now you tell me.

All canon material is subject to change by the DM staff. We've posted for convenience this OOC info about Ibrandul, but it may well be that in EfU he is alive or some other deity is pretending to be him, or he's really a giant grasshopper.

I vote giant grasshopper.

Words cannot describe the visage of Ibrandul. Words are meaningless.

Only this:

That link is excellent. Thanks for that x2.

As one of two who were involved with the Ibandrulites in the past (along with Weevil!) I can safely say; almost -every- PC somehow knows that Ibrandul is really dead, or is secretly Shar, or that their domains mesh absolutely perfectly ..

... and as we all know, it just takes one person to 'know' that, and the knowledge spreads. The advice is as follows; should anyone be leaning against 'Ibrandul is Ibrandul. Deal' send a PM to explain, if needed. If that doesn't work, grab a DM if needed, if it's going far. Don't wait for it to get out of hand, because by that time, three quarters of the server will know, all from reputable sources.

And then you just have to nuke the server. With deep lizards. It's the only way to be sure
