I was thinking(A shocker in itself...), and came to the conclusion, that it would really be nifty, if the shrines served a purpous, other than raising a fallen companion, and purchasing leet spells... I'm speaking of, worshiping a deity, and receiving some form of compensation. Praying in a shrine, giving some sort of, petty enchantment- Bless, Aide, Virtue etc... Nothing real fancy, just something to let the patrons see, "Hey Tr0m knows I exist!"
Any Comments? Flames? Hate Mail?

Bless and Aid are pretty damn powerful spells(because the attack bonus they provide stacks with each other and all other spells). Virtue though maybe!

Personally I'd prefer to leave such things to DM actions/events.

So it is possible, to get a DM to give you a faith bonus?

Something like this was already implemented: It's called the Cleric class.

I am against the gods being there to much, I mean, THEY AREN"T ALL ABOUT SANCTUARY! They do have worshippers in Thay you know, and that place is so much better than this little begotton town of Pirates.

Someday I'm going to implement a script where the priestly guy gives you a pair of worshipper robes or an amulet if you follow the deity of the shrine.
But besides that they can be used as HQ's for the faithful, places to have ceremonies/sermons/whatever. After all, I'm sure if you promote a certain deity a Shrine would be willing to help you in whatever endeavor, whether it be running for Council or blessings for a holy crusade.

I know the shrine contribution bowls keep a running tally of your donations, but do they serve any other purpose? Maybe after you have donated a certain amount of gold as a follower of a certain deity you get such robes or amulet...

These collection bowls determine the state of the temple/shrine. If you don't get any gold in there, things will start falling apart. If you get lots in there, it will flourish and become amazing.

I think it requires a good RP and the DooMs watching then it's possibly gods could certainly help you.
Imagine a paladin or cleric praying on his temple before heading into a rescue mission.
Would be cool.
And Thomas, your comment reminds me The Order of The Stick a chapter when the dwarf cleric (can't remember his name) prays during the battle for some god help.

I would love to see more PC clerics holding ceremonies in their respective shrines/temples and gathering faithful/converts and other interesting things.

ScottyB is so correct! We have lots and lots of shrines and temples in game (Some more hidden than others) and it really is a shame to see them used so infrequently by charismatic preachers that try to bring in their flock through prayer and articulate speeches. Rock out like this, and you will be rewarded properly. Trust me!

Are you saying there's a great preference to using some of these far-out, tucked away shrines (which by the way, "far-out" is defined as "further from position A, aka Town Hall steps, then it takes to get to Mary's or sometimes Clowns") than to preach in the streets to the masses? That's what I read out from what sherry says, although to me it always seems like it would be best to reach as many people as possible, incorporating them in the RP lovin'.

A group of Ibrandulites once led a pilgrimage. It took them through the Sand Caverns to a holy place, a huge rite to Ibrandul.
It was all done IC. Over a dozen people went on it. To pray and worship and see what happened.

I was talking mainly about the Temple of Tyr, Ibrandul, and Grumbar. Street preaching is cool too.

Street preach to get the word out, then see how effective you are by the sermon turnout!
A guy in the street, even if he's a 10th level cleric, is a guy in the street. A guy in a church is, well, in a church! You don't have to worry about the rabble or the quest-trains. Drive home that message about your god! Demonstrate the awesomeness of your priestly might without the Spellguard writing you up for Unwarded Use of Magic! Avoid cell time for Disturbing the Peace!
And show people that your faith isn't localized in a bubble around your street corner, there's a place for followers to meet - a place for others to carry on your message when you meet your inevitable end.
If your god doesn't have a shrine near the city yet, go ahead and claim a cave or abandoned structure. You might not have a statue or an altar or even a mat for a while, but defend the place you want to make holy, make it important, and we might take notice! It's a lot more fun if the PC Kossuthans have to fight off a PC terrorist group of Auril-followers every other time they meet. Shrine guards and locked doors can take the fun out of it, and statues tend to get blown up when you're busy not in the shrine. :(
