My Dear Unfortunate Correspondent -

In reading your letter to me, I could not overlook the simple manner in which you signed it.

I am compelled by my very nature to open my returning letter by expressing my heartfelt sympathy with you over your unfortunate condition. It is a cruel turn of luck that would put you under such merciless hardship, and I cannot myself imagine what it must be like to go about the day's business in such a shape.

I know it is a small consolation, but from the outset I promise to you that I will not hold against you something over which you have no control; I know in my heart that it is not your fault that your parents gave you the name "Ichabod."

Your fortune has turned today however, as I have a perfectly good name, and I happen to be looking for an assistant. You must be able to carry at least fifty pounds, we will be walking over vast distances without rest, and we will at times be confronting and capturing dangerous wild creatures. In return for your services, I will share with you more power and arcane knowledge than you ever dreamed of, and of course, make you wealthy beyond imagination.
