I am enjoying trying to figure out the summoning reagents in game and in character. However, I think it would be better if some of the more common reagents were more available. It is difficult to try to create a themed spell caster when it is almost impossible to gather reagents.
Also, it might be interesting to have summoning books that allow casters permanent access to certain summoning themes like clerics get with their domains. ie. The Book of Flame: when selected give fire elemental summons, etc.
Maybe these do exist in game and I just haven't found them, or maybe they are seen as too powerful, but hey, its a suggestion.

Summoning books would be pretty interesting if they're rare/expensive enough, especially for conjurers. I'm pretty sure you can be wanded for summoning schools as well, so you always summon from that school.
They're rare, but they're definitely out there. I wouldn't mind seeing that gnome in the market sell a few basic ones, though.

That gnome in the market has been there saying I'm leaving soon! For as long as I can remember too.

First, I'd think that since we are in the underdark some of the more common 'surface-based' reagents may not be available.
Second, with area's of wild/no magic in them, reagents that are common, might still have radically different effects.
Thrid, the gnome in the market is trying to bribe his way out of the underdark if you read all of his text options, and at one point he had bought a gnome teleporter that he admitted he couldn't fix. (the item is now elsewhere in the module).
Having a book of underdark summoning stuff, would be cool, but I'd like it to be a rare find and not something that can be purchased, unless by a PC seller.

Correct me if I am wrong. But I think these books do exist- they simply do not spawn as random loot or cannot be bought.
I agree reagents are rare but not so much... they sell for 1 gp at normal vendors.
Offer 5-10 gold for reagents and suddenly every quester on the server brings them to you.
I did have a character like this that wanted to exploit the summoning themes, never got around to playing him a lot- but I did pay for reagents and amassed quite a few.
Paid like... I think.. 100 gold for Dragon blood. It's an exotic addition to any conjurer's arsenal!
Of course, you're not amassing gold to have an arsenal of wands and reagents, but at least you're creating a trade for otherwise meaningless items.

I find it funny that when you kill a dragon there is only 1 vial of dragons blood, I mean really! It's a whole dragon, where's the gallon tub of it!

Not a scripted conjuration, but come on- think outside the box here. 8)

It -is- already possible to permanently change your summon theme with no dm assistance. It's up to you to figure out how and do it!

Now I'm so damn curious as to how you change your themes without a DM.
Oh well, next char is a wizard I think.

HAH! I beat the rush! Mine died yesterday XD
But on an on topic note, yes...there are books and ways to change summons IG. Also, themes can be apped for too I think? Maybe a DM could elaborate on that one?
