Other Games with Co-Op or PW play

I'm looking to take a break for a bit (I know, it's heresy) and am looking for another game (older is okay) with either decent co-op play or PW RP opportunities.

What I've played that I like: Delta Force series, for its co-op possibilities. NWN (for its PWs). Call of Duty (loved single player but cannot find any co-op options)

What I hate so far: WOW, City of Heroes, etc. (hate to pay to play when I have only 3-4 hours a week AND the players are all smacktard uberpowergamers for the most part) Call of Duty (loved single player, but Deathmatch sucks)

Basically, I want an environment where players either work together to face AI, as we have here, OR I want a PVP environment where smart play is rewarded and roleplaying is as well. Deathmatch doesn't cut it here since you can respawn in a minute later with no real penalties.

Suggestions, please :) Thanks!

Try Operation Flashpoint (Or Armed Assault, It's sequel, if youve got the PC and are willing to put up with the troubles) if you're into Co-op.

Some great fun can be had playing!

Cheers

There are two really great mods for Battlefield 2. Both make the game less manic and mechanically more reasonable.

Project Reality is a highly realistic modification, where players move slowly, maps are large, vehicles are a coveted resource, and teamwork is a must.

Point of Existence is faster than PR, but still better balanced than BF2 vanilla, mixing realistic with arcade gameplay very smoothly. It also features the unique setting of Ukraine/Germany.

Both mods have Tactical Gamer servers which are often full at certain times of the day that have mandatory teamwork rules and mature players.

You can buy Battlefield 2 (which is needed to play these mods, of course) for $10.

These options are strictly online PvP, and offer no roleplaying. But if you're interested in tactical, squad-based modern combat, I'd recommend these.

Try Hellgate London. Once you buy it, paying monthly is an option.

I second DD's Armed Assault recommendation (if your rig will handle it..and you don't mind a few glitches). And Operation Flashpoint may be old, but that just means mods for every man XD Want newer? Rainbow Six Vegas is balls to the walls action with some stylin' gameplay. Older maybe? Splinter Cell series is good, and by now, cheap.

Also, consider The Witcher...it's badass dark fantasy goodness. DD is playing it too....probably because you can score with e-babes >.>

It sounds like you're looking for a multiplayer RPG in which there's meaningful loss from dying, or at least isn't a non-stop fragfest, with either rich PvE or PvP. A good community is a plus. Having your accomplishments saved is also a plus. Paying by subscription is a minus. Actually this is what drew me to EfU. There aren't many games like this out there, as most MMOs these days follow WoW's footsteps where nothing really matters and everyone is herded along very narrow guiderails to advance themselves. The only one I could think of that fits every criterion is a text-based MUD called Discworld, based on you guessed it. It recreates the Discworld feel very well, with its unique brand of humor that lampoons traditional roleplaying concepts. For instance this is helpfile on the samurai guild

___________________________________________________________________ // \ || These highly trained and usually well-born swordsmen are sworn to || defend the lives and honour of the noble houses they serve. | || Quartered on the estates of the Houses, they train fiercely in | || between excursions where they do their best to 'accidentally' run | || into (and possibly stab) samurai from other houses. | || | || While each Samurai will eventually become a member of the Hong, | || Fang, Tang or McSweeney families and thus have their home on one | || of the fabulous sprawling estates which are a demonstration of | || the wealth and opulence of Agatea and her citizens, all recruits | || will begin their training at the Garden of Steel Flowers. There's some Discworld-ish roleplay but it isn't enforced. You get experience for exploring new rooms or rooms you haven't been to in a long time, killing monsters, solving scripted one-time quests, and some for just being online. I found the best way is by exploring. PvP is an optional flag on your character, once you turn it on you're fair game for anyone and you can't go back. I believe you drop all your equipment when you die. The PvP circuit is relatively self-regulated so I hear, if you piss people off they'll go after you, if you lay low and don't draw attention you'll get left alone. Well, I only played for a week, but it was pretty enjoyable the whole time.

There is this awesome game out there, has PW and incredible rp on it,..it is a bit older, and the graphics pale by comparison to some of the new stuff, but the immersion and story telling by far make up for it. The DM staff is unparraled, and the player base is quite frankly the best out there..game is called NWN, the world..EFU. I highly reccomend it....

Sorry, had to be done.

Thanks all, you've given me some ideas. Thanks to everyone except efuincarnate who can just sod off.

Thanks again all :)
