[Councillor Nikitovich]

Flamerule 21st, 152 SR.

    Councillor Varlam Nikitovitch:

Enclosed are copies both of a letter sent to the library and the subsequent reply to the letter from the staff. Please note my careful usage of the word "between" in the first line, emphasized for your convenience.

    Imrahel Flamerule 20th, 152 SR.
      For the library staff:

I request as comprehensive as possible lists of plagues between the Chilling Plague (87) and the Rotting Death (151), and invasions between Hennet's fall to Thool'oon (46) and Sslal'teesh's attack (151), respectively. This means as accurate dates as possible; noteworthy people; notable casualties; and whatever else you suspect I may want to know. Do not forget to list sources.

Similar information on current and previous shrines and temples is desired as well.

    Library staff 21 Flamerule, 152

    Mister Morunov,

If you visit the Library, you will notice that there is an artifact on the wall in the form of a Rotting Disease Mask.

I believe this relic was placed there by the Acting Curator at the time, now Councillor Varlam Nikitovich.

Considering there is little information I can directly suggest you read concerning the Sanctuary Historical timelines you seek knowledge about - I will be forwarding your letter to Councillor Nikitovich, who may be the only authority in Sanctuary who can help you with such detail about the plagues you speak of.

I urge you to write to him yourself on the matter.

    Timekeeper Morunov.

Timekeeper Murunov,

There have likely been a few outbreaks of minor diseases, mostly in Lower, between the two major and recorded plagues in our history. There was an outbreak of 'corpse blight' some months before the Rotting Death, almost completely contained within Lower; the Watch or Spellguard (or more likely their volunteer branch, the closed Civil Defense League and the active Spellguard Associates) may have received a very brief report documenting this, but it wasn't a terrible problem and easily combatted. Any lingering blight after the Rotting Death was easily quarantined and treated, due to our new and hard-earned experience with disease.

I cannot name all the major attacks on the settlement in the hundred year timespan you address, but there was:

  • an attack by illithid thralls some two years ago (this may be in the old Watch files),
  • an attack by a small drow raiding party a year and a half ago,
  • a near-devestating army from Traensyr that was rumored to be 10,000-strong, but hastily returned before getting halfway to us; we now know there is instability in Traensyr; I can look for the exact month with a bit of time,
  • two goblin seiges were possibly led by 'Colonel Spitfire' about a year ago; I helped operate a catapult during the second attack; the month would have been Mirtul, and the first attack likely a month earlier (Watch files could confirm); minimal casualties during my seige, until the very end when goblin suicide attackers wearing explosives breached the gates and detonated in the group that was holding it; perhaps a dozen injured and no more than four dead,
  • Maalgor the Malevolent, though a single orcblood, bested the entire gate defense Watch (four privates and a sergeant), Watch backup (three privates, a sergeant), and two supporting Agents of the Spellguard (one being myself). His devious use of Darkness allowed him to escape before a larger mob could be rallied; two privates died,
  • an Undead Svirfneblin seige upon a stairwell in the ruins, which no longer exists, lasted for at least a year; the Watch might have a dated report for when they finally destroyed it,
  • a general (and massive) Undead attack poured out of a portal in the area commonly known as the "bowels" of the Machine; no fatalities or disabling injuries; the goblin necromancer Grungetoe was present, and I mistook him as responsible, at first; for unrelated crimes, he was executed no more than two months later (if that can help fix a date),
  • borders with particularly untamed ruins tend to fall under Chosen attack at irregular intervals; structural damage, casualties and fatalities vary wildly,
  • there have probably been at least three more major attacks on our gates between the attack from Sslal'teesh and the Formian invasion, but thankfully those do not interest you (at least presently).
I'm sorry to say, I can only provide this somewhat vague information on the past two years' worth of notable assaults.

As for shrines, none in Sanctuary have been destroyed, to my knowledge, only built. There is the Helmite, Grumbar, Ibrandul, Triad, Tempus and Red Knight shrines, and the Hoaran and Tyrran temples within the city, if you include the Lower city.

I hope my response has been useful in your pursuit of knowledge, Varlam Nikitovich 21 Flamerule 152

Flamerule 25th, 152 SR.

    Councillor Varlam Nikitovich:

I wonder if you can redirect me to sources containing information on the serving years of Sanctuary's five Mayors. Anything you can tell me about former Mayor Bhast's murderers would be appreciated as well.

Lastly, if you can confirm that the current Spellguard Commander Stephanos Simms is indeed the same Commander Simms mentioned in The Reckoning of Law, that would make me glad.

    Timekeeper Morunov.

Timekeeper Morunov,

I'm afraid any exact dates have been lost; Mayor Michael Bresley disappeared shortly before the Ubel Rebellion in 116; it was resolved when Yorrick Bresley assumed Mayorship. Demetrius Bhast was appointed Mayor by the council earlier this year; some months later (the exact number I can't remember) evidence of combat and a rather ominous scorchmark are all that were found in his chambers. Seekers were the original suspects, but that was apparently dropped, as they were allowed to return to Sanctuary; they've since left us once again.

The current Spellguard Commander is indeed Stephanos Simms; he recently visited the council by magical projection this last week.
