My Fellow Citizens,
I realize that at this moment you are confused and that there are many rumors. Yes, I was removed by the Council by Sheriff Azzam. However, it must be made clear what happened. You have only known me for such a short time, and yet you know that I have been nothing but upfront with you. I am being upfront with you now.
You elected me to public office to carry out your will. From the moment I donned my robes I have made every attempt to do just that. Under my leadership this Council has been one of the most successful Council's in recent memory. I am ashamed and saddened that I will no longer be a part of it. It was an honor to serve you for even the briefest of time that I did.
However, to quell the rumors let me make clear what happened. Yes, I made a deal with the Spellguard prior to the trial not to have Agent Best executed or exiled. This was part of a reunification agreement between our city and the Spellguard. Had Agent Best been slain reunification would not have been possible. I acted in the way I felt was best for the city and I stand by my action.
It began with the building of the charter of reunification. The Spellguard wished for the warrant for Agent Best's arrest dropped. The Council refused this action and at the suggestion of Councilor Varlam the promise of non-execution and non-exile was offered by myself to the Spellguard. In exchange, Agent Best would submit a full report of his actions involving the event in question to the Council and would turn himself over to the Watch. The Spellguard accepted the offer and Agent Best turned himself in voluntarily.
The trial went on for some time. However, at the heart of it was this: It was clear that if the Council ordered the death of Agent Best or his exile there would be no reunification.
My friends, I encourage you to remember the assistance given by the Spellguard during the Formian Invasion. The Animatrons saved many lives. Machines can be replaced. People cannot. The Spellguard are responsible for enchanting the Watch equipment. They are responsible for purifying our water. Without the Spellguard, our city would find itself greatly vulnerable to many of the dangers of the dark. Without them, our water would become undrinkable.
I did all that I could as Councilor to ensure that our city had the best chance of survival. Compromise was necessary. We have compromised by allowing the Shadow Tribe to take up residence in our home. What is that in compared to the minor compromise of allowing a single man, who voluntarily admits his crimes, turns himself in, places himself before the Council to be judged and cooperates fully? Should that be considered "corruption" for allowing him to live?
Yes, his actions were wrong. Had things been differently, I would have certainly have executed him. However, things were not different. The fate of our city hung in the balance.
Sheriff Azzam attempted to intimidate the Council by opening the trial to the public. He believed that this would force us to rule in his favor. He was wrong. I do not bow to intimidation. He claims that this man should be executed for his crimes, and perhaps he should. However, even as he says this another man who was enthralled by this Illithid has been welcomed into the Watch with open arms. This man was the primary witness in the trial, during which the entire time he was enthralled and willingly admitted that he could not remember half of what happened.
When I attempted to explain the events to the Sheriff he refused to speak to me. Instead he ordered his men to take my things under threat of violence. I had no choice.
So now, you know the truth. I was denied a trial by my request. I was stripped of my Council seat under threat of violence, and thrown into the street without my belongings. And I ask: Why? Because I would not give a verdict that the Sheriff wanted and he sought vengeance against me? Perhaps, but I do not know what he thinks as he would not give me the opportunity to speak with him.
Now, I submit myself to you. I do not repent for my actions. What I did - all that I did - was with this cities best interests at heart. It was not for personal power, as some claim. It was to have the Spellguard maintain our city, to purify our water, and to ensure that we as Sanctuarians stood united once again. To build more animatrons like those used in the defense of our city during the Formian invasion.
If you find me guilty, then so be it. I am guilty. If you find me innocent, then I encourage you to think well and hard about what the future may hold in store.
I am sorry if I have let you down.
