Favorite and Least Favorite Quests?
Not a huge fan of the Goblin Fort,.
It starts off fast and furious and ends flacid and limp.
I have not done so many of them, but of the low level ones I like Zurkhwood and Angry Miner the best, I think. Chosen is also one I like (maybe because it is the one I have done the most too). But I really can't name some I don't like, since as I said, have not done that many of them.
I did it once, but I like it. Orog fortress, it's challenging and needs teamwork.
One quest I kinda have hate/love relationship is Gnolls. If you have a bad group, you just stand in one spot thinking: "How can we get through here?" And then kill gnolls one by one, obviously using tab so that you wouldn't need to go too near of them.
Orogs and ettercaps would be my favorite ones. Both are very challenging and will end up in a lot of screaming without some discipline. (Let the scout do his job, dammit!!)
Something that goes to illustrate just how awesome the orog quest can be:
Orog Skald *Orog Skald casts Stinking Cloud* Orog Skald: [Talk] Sing ob de stinky! Orog Skald: [Talk] Sing de song of stinky doom! Farting blasting goes kaboom! Orog Skald: [Talk] Sing it loud for pooting power! Sing for stinky, eb'ry hour! Orog Skald: [Talk] All de time, we make de smell! ORCS ATTACK, YOU GO TO HELL!Thumbs up to the poet of the DM crew! :D
Least favorite one... probably zurkhwood or mausoleum. Both are kind of straightforward with very little variety in the enemies. Yeah, the motivational signs are great, but after a few times it gets old.
Mausoleum is my least favourite. It's too straigth-forward, but it gives great hints to a darker, more sinister secret, which you'll discover by another great quest. (These two quests alone are straight-forward and boring, but combined they're great. I think everyone who figured the secret out already knows what quest I mean).
Goblins Fortress- The storming of the gate gives a truly spectacular feel to it, but as pointed out before, the ending just isn't spectacular enough.
But apart from that, I haven't done too many quests, really. I hope I'll be up and running again in a week and can enjoy every single one of them.
I have not done em all only like 3, my favourite so far is the Gnoll one, it provides alot of fast paced action, cool!
Favorite? Orog Fortress. That vulcano is badass.
Least favorite? Mausoleum. Needs more variety, needs more options, needs more thinking.
I, for one, quite like the Mausoleum as a good way to initiate new players - with some that I have introduced the world to, I am unsure whether they would survive anything made more difficult as their first battle experience. And as Coldburn said, it isn't that straightforward, story-wise, anyways.
Other than that, the temple of Hoar is nice. The ettercap warren seemed too lengthy if you play it with advanced scouting as should be due.
But in fact, I have done very few quests so far.
To expand, Orog Fortress was my favorite, it was continually fast paced and had an epic feel.
I disliked Goblin Fortress for several reasons already mentioned.
The others, Sewertown Undead, I enjoy, Red Smiles seems a bit straight forward, but it is good for RPing potential if you have certain characters.
I'd have to put the Temple of Hoar at the top of my list, as well. Each time I've done it, it has been a challenge, and yet doable, so it seems fairly well balanced. Or then I've just been lucky. Gnolls I have done once, with a team of three 5-6 level characters I think, and it was touch-and-go the whole time, man was I relieved when it was over. It was so fine experience in fact that I haven't wanted to spoil that since by doing it anew. The Portal to the Surface was nice also, although finding an IC reason to do it a second time is a bit of a stretch.
And anybody who says the ending of the Goblin Fort is too easy has clearly not tried the new 'balanced' version  https://efupw.com/efu1-forum/topic/25/2592/goblin-fortress/index.html?amp;highlight=goblin+fort
My favourite is the Red Smiles, its short, hard and has a good reward, IMO you need to make more high level quests, that are short, instead of these epic two hour quests, but thats just me.
Efu_Darkness2 My favourite is the Red Smiles, its short, hard and has a good reward, IMO you need to make more high level quests, that are short, instead of these epic two hour quests, but thats just me.
The problem with high level short quests is that they don't challenge parties whatsoever. The party can just buff up like crazy at the beginning, and their spell durations will last the whole quest. If we were to make short ones, it would likely have to be overwealming foes with lots of instant death. I have a big problem with the Red Smile quest right now with high level parties. It's a complete walkover followed by free money.
Love:
Gob Fort (please tweak the last fight a bit, and whats the deal with the room of critters that arent Goblins?) Urog Fort (Adore it, although I wish I could just once see something good come out of the forge). Yuan Ti (the End options are by far, the coolest ones yet. Being able to exact some revenge at the end is awesome).
Least Favourite:
Stinky Sewers (I hate all the disease, poison, acid, and those goddamned stink traps especially). Brewery (If there's something -more- to that quest, please make it easier to find).
Favourite Qeusts: Orog Fort, Stinky Sewers, Brewry.
The brewry qeust may not be as "in depth" as some qeust but I really like how challenging and fun it can be.
Orog fort is just too awesome to explain. Its challenging, far from easy and yet not as insane as things like goblin fort which have lower level requirements.
Stinky Sewers: with the exception of the stink traps which are annoying, this qeust is just fine. So what if you get poisoned and diseased THATS THE POINT you can't run around fighting a bunch of mutated venomous disease ridden spiders without expecting to catch a thing or two.
Least Favourite Qeusts: Goblin Fort, Hoar Qeust
Goblin Fort: The recent tweakings have made it far to difficult for those with the minimuim level range. Two assassins took down an entire party last I was there and I would hate to see what ONE stormtrooper could do. The end is only limp because the start is INSANE. (unless your a level 9 paladin called Ivandur or have said paladin with you to take blows :P )
Hoar Qeust: This qeust is very missleading. Its handlable by any party but the boss is just insane. He should at least have his haste removed, or have to cast the buffs on himself (which I doubt he even has available). Even making him Drink potions would be nice
Favourite Quests:
Goblin Fortress, Orog Fortress: Taking over a hostile enemy fortress always is a blast. I've had some of the most exciting, and memorable questing moments on EFU doing these two quests.
Orog Fortress wins points for being visually stunning, and keeping a group on its toes for at least an hour straight. Goblin Fortress for the paranoia assassins instill, and the fun that arises from a sweet archer shoot-out to win the walls.
Least Favourite:
Trolls - A bit bland, all things considered compared to the other quests, visual wise and monster wise. Though I've only run through this quest once, so it's pretty possible I've missed something awesome.
It's a quest FFS, not a qeust. :)
The goblin fortress is awesome, althought it's been made too difficult lately. Seems hard to find balance in that one, but thanks for all the effort already. It surely is worth adjusting. Lots of different tactics can be used and there's lots of room for good RP'ing as well.
I find mausoleum quite enjoyable as well. Despite the simplicity, it's good for newbies and low-level chars. You can't make all the quests three-hour long epic journeys with helluva preparations.
My opinion is, that we need more simple low-level SOLO errands, ones like councillor Tyrell's questions or that svirfneblin flora book thing. More choices how to do them and diversity in how it affects the PC alignment-wise. The latter one could be taken into consideration for other quests as well.
I have a tie between many, depends on who I am as a PC and what they get enjoyment out of. I for one really do like the Zurchwood quest because I feel its vital to give low-level, low HP PCs something they feel they can do on their own without staying behind some hired hand's shoulder (as long as they have a bow). As for quests that could use tweaking, I would say the Gnoll quest's pinch point is a little brutal at times, and can really be unfair to both the PCs and the gnolls when played right... wait, thats a good thing. Um... just make more quests then? Maybe take some old ones away and/or change the old quests to give them new requirements (even if only for a week or so), so your next lazy saunter down to look for that lost pickaxe is actually now a completly different quest where the cryptkeeper has pickaxed his way into a hidden cave and is being held captive!
I don't really have a favorite. I've hardly been on any, and the ones I've been on I didn't enjoy a whole lot. Though I've got a liking for the Pig Farm, because it's just great for my character.
My least favorite though is Stinky Sewers.
The quest is repetitive, the roleplaying gets stagnant about halfway through. (I can only emoting *coughs/gags/etc* for so long.)
The dazing and slipping and slowing effects are more annoying than entertaining for me, as a front liner, and I don't like them.
Worse still is that upon ending the quest I feel obligated (as its simply what my character does) to spend an hour emoting *smells terrible* and *scrubs at his armor ineffectually*, which is just kind of annoying after the first time I do the quest.
And that's all I've got to say about that. >.>
See, I found pig farm very lacking. It feels incomplete, perhaps a little rushed.
Goblin Fortress is exciting, but dies out once you're inside the fortress.
Ettercaps is frightening due to the traps. I like that.
Stinky sewers has a great gimmick to it, and I enjoy the flavor overall.
This has been an interesting thread to read.
In terms of balance, there isn't a single player on the server who's done goblin fortress in its current incarnation. However, it has been a quest where it's either too easy or too hard. I'm curious to see if it's closer to being about right now. Are there any specific suggestions for as how to keep up the pacing of the quest in the interior areas?
Practically all of the quests were rushed (some being done in the course of an hour or two), and from a design level are admittedly quite simple -- this is because I try to make lots and lots of quests so there's no lack of content. This is also because I can't personally script anything complex at all, and those in our DM team who can are generally busy with more important things. However, as time goes on I'll be going back and fleshing out some quests.
The extra parts to the Brewery quest really aren't too tough to find. Although, there's actually a lot of quests that have parts that no one has done to my knowledge.
I do have a preference for designing quests that exploit potential weaknesses in characters, or allow other kinds of characters to show off their strengths. I also do like disease and poison which I understand some players just have an OOC dislike for.
Pig Farmer would probably be one of the first on the list for needing improvements.
I know what quest will be my favorite when I'm done with it, but for now I would probably agree that the Orog Fortress is the best for now, although I've some improvements in mind for it.
Inquisitor It starts off fast and furious and ends flacid and limp.
Dude, you seriously need a break away from #Kinky_Kingdom.
I have not done many quests (I'm not allowing myself to leave upper sanctuary unitl I've been in every building and talked to everyone... Can't believe I missed the tailor on my map) but I can comment on the ones that I did do.
The delivery quests.
Favourite one: The long haul to the Blue Mushroom. Great because walking through the mines scares the carp out of me! I swear, it's like the left hand moves and keeps the cursor over the invis potion and the right tabs like there's no tomorrow.
Least fav one: Cooky. The quest is just too short. By that I mean the walking distance is too short. One does not have enough time to be tempted by the pie. "Do I want to eat it?", "No, I gave my word. I'm LG.", "But then again, fresh pie beats another dose of rat stew." *runs off with pie*, *gets captured for stealing pie*, *gets charged with capital crimes for stealing pie* (Herald pulled some strings), *dies in the cage, stones still being thrown at him as he manages to yell out* "Totally worth it!"
My least favorite is the stinky sewer quest. I would go as far to say I hate that quest.
I do enjoy the orog camp, that was a blast.
all i got for now
(hate the stinky sewer)
Favorite: Orog Fortress and Arga's Tomb (Used to be Gobbo Fort, but now I'll only approach that quest if I have 3+ of the top Maulers of the server by my side.)
Least favorite: Ettercaps... Don't get me started.
Howland I do have a preference for designing quests that exploit potential weaknesses in characters, or allow other kinds of characters to show off their strengths. I also do like disease and poison which I understand some players just have an OOC dislike for.The effects can be annoying for sure but I think it's a good thing overall that poison and disease are so common in EfU.
For one thing, they should be common dangers in the Underdark. For another thing, it makes two feats that are otherwise rarely taken much more attractive. For yet a third thing, it makes paladins that much more of a saving grace (Remove Disease, anyone? Yes, there are never enough! :( ) and gives two other classes (monks, druids) with immunities against these things more purpose.
Oh, and... Ironguts must have among the best cost/effect ratios of spells in EfU >.>
I hate the Goblin Fortress. HATE. It's very hard quest to do if your group is on the lower end of the level spectrum, as you can't afford to throw hundreds of gold worth of throwables/potions at it to defeat the initial siege. And my favorite quest....is a toss up between the man offering to portal people to the surface....I'm not sure if that's a new quest....but if it is, I guess I was there for the DM quest that spawned it. And the other one which ties for favorite, is the gnoll quest. Good variety of tactical challenges, and fast paced.
That hoar boss is easy, i killed him in two hits. I dont see how he is hard at all.
Many of the harder quests have chests that draw from our "High" treasure or even "Rare and Unique." Basically we have a tons of ambient loot sorted by base class and value, with some rare chances of some really good stuff (for EfU) dropping.
Additionally, increasingly quest bosses have randomized chance of dropping various loot -- again, sometimes some pretty good stuff.
