This thread most assuredly gives me hope that plots of all depth and complexity are alive and well on EfU. Lately, it seems there have been a lot of comments discussing the insidious nature of in-character romance-or downright mocking and protesting against it. I, quite frankly, cannot understand where these comments come from. The purpose of EfU is to create amazing, in-depth, overwhelming stories for our characters-and what is a story without a love element? What would Arabian Nights have been without Shahryar and Scherezade, the Arthurian legends without Arthur and Guinevere, Shakespearean drama without Hamlet and Ophelia, modern poetry and literature without the themes of love and romance? Throughout all of human history, fantastical works of literature have interwoven the threads of drama, fantasy, heroism, and love-binding all these greatest of human aspirations and dreams into tales that inspire and uplift the hearts and minds of all of us.
I firmly believe that, when Sir Howland created EfU, he created not just a setting in which the gritty feel of Underdark combat and survival could be explored-he created a setting where the everlasting theme of love could be examine and explored. In truth, cannot love lift up two characters, and help them essentially escape from the Underdark, even if only in the core of their hearts? I think so, and I think Sir Howland thought so, too. The whimsical, broad strokes of drama and intrigue that love paints create a venue for every character to find a new way to tell their story, and to truly win the Escape from the Underdark server.
With all that being said, I want to commend PlayerCharacter and BrittanyPanthas for having the courage and the roleplaying skills to masterfully interweave the theme of teenage schoolboy on teacher love into their characters' stories. I thought we might never see any epic in-character romance like Callasil and Feina (LOVE EVERLASTING) or Saroki and Wilimek . , but you guys came through when we needed you. Your romance has been an utter and complete joy to watch blossom, from the first nascent stirrings of affection visible when Jaden shot a monster attacking Alyssara, to the awkward yet shy gifts of that hideous junk loot you find on quests but can't sell to the NPC merchants, to the inevitable signs of growing bonds and romance that the obligatory shortening of absurdly long elven names heralds, to the furtive glances when your PCs were changing equipment in the Barracks, to that first stolen kiss in the heat of danger, faced with imminent death; and lastly, to your very first mention in the Penrose Knows, the true portent of in-character romance in Sanctuary.
These screenshots really sum up why every PC who has had the chance to witness this romance grow and blossom into full love over the two weeks Jaden and Alyssara have spent killing monsters, sharing loot, and whispering furtively together has been utterly amazed and enamored with the awesome level of play that both of these guys have put forth. I can safely say that I think we all had butterflies in our stomach as they typed out their kissing emotes; when their soften elven lips finally parted ever so slightly to brush against each other as a cool breeze tugs at the gentle yet stern waters of the rippling nighttime ocean, we exhaled audibly, each of us smiling at our monitors in true respect for what these players had accomplished together.
You have given us an in-game experience like none before, PlayerCharacter and BrittanyPanthas; though I fear to say it, I am afraid we may never experience another like it again. For however long your in-character romance lasts, until a new and cuter female elf with a sexier login and a hotter description comes along, I believe I can speak for the entire playerbase when I saw that we will collectively hold our breaths and watch in awe and joy as this love spins out and completes the majestic tale of Jaden and Alyssara.
When love happens on EfU, SaRF is there for it; now that you've made the entire server aware of it, we're all there for you two. For this one night, you two men playing cute elven characters managed to transcend the boundaries of gender, electricity, social conventions, and even the nagging stigma of EfU's harsh playerbase; you managed to bring us all around, and show us that love has a place among every character's story.
Thank you both for this magnificent gift. I could not have asked for a better experience with my character, and I know you two could never have found a better experience with yours.
From the core of the heart,
~SaRF
