Letter to Haldor Longhand

[This letter is hand delivered to the Tyrran Temple. The writing is in a hand that seems to favor large, bold words, and a stylized flourish.]

Haldor Longhand,

It is with great disappointment that I write you this letter. However, I pray that I shall be able to save you from the darkness that swirls around you - around us all.

Yesterday you arrived late to a scene in which the Orcish Monster known as Roshnak was laid upon the ground before the Servants of the Purifying Flame. I can only hope that it was a misunderstanding of the situation that forced the crowd and yourself to turn against the light that pushes back the darkness. Therefore I shall recount the events that led up to that moment and the events after.

Eternal Flame Adad, myself and other priests of the Purifying Flame were walking around the haven of evil known as Lower when we were approached by the monster that we came to know as Roshnak. He presented himself as an ambassador from Mycopolis and said that he wanted to work out a deal with us. I saw what he was from the moment he stood before me.

Understand well, that these barbarians seek nothing less than to bring down the civilized world we are striving to build. They seek nothing less than to force us to lower ourselves down as beasts and animals. They willingly embrace all types of evil, from the monstrous races of the dark, to the Drow which they have been known to give safe haven. They are a threat to us and all that we stand for, and as such I was not surprised that a monster such as Roshnak was made an ambassador.

However, Eternal Flame Adad cautioned us to temper ourselves and hear the creature out. As such we listened. It was then that the beast told us that he had cut an ear off a man running for Council and had eaten the flesh. He then made the offer to allow us to build a shrine within Mycopolis if only we would kill a man for him to eat. Eternal Flame Adad was calm and collected. He refused the beast even as I wished to see it consumed by the Purifying Fires.

The discussion went further and the beast attempted to lure individuals who were passing by to come forward so that he could attempt to get us to slay them. We continued our refusal, and then he began to insult Almighty Kossuth. It became clear that a battle was to take place between us. Harsh words were exchanged and soon we found ourselves at blows. There were more of us than him, so he quickly fell before our combined might.

He was made to feel the painful burn of the Purifying Flame, and his belongings were ordered to be protected by Eternal Flame Adad. We would have no thief steal them. Eternal Flame Adad offered him a chance to live, all that he must do in exchange for this was to recant his threats to hunt us down. He refused. He was made to feel the searing heat of the Purifying Flame. The request was made again. He again refused.

It was then that a crowd began to gather. Individuals started to step forward to defend the beast - a monster that had admitted to eating flesh, attempted to goad us into murder, who clearly stated that he intended to kill us, and who was the worshiper of a vile and evil god.

It was then that we learned that it was possible that he may have been lying about being from Mycopolis at all. That he may have simply told the lie in an attempt to get us to kill an innocent person so that he could eat the flesh. Eternal Flame Adad attempted to learn the truth, but as the crowd grew they also began to grow restless.

The crowd began to demand that we slay him. They began to make demands of us as if they had a right to make such a judgment. I made the suggestion that this beast should stand trial for his crimes. However, Eternal Flame Adad noted that the city was divided and that the Temple of Hoar was the only place that could be considered the law in the Dark Sanctuary Below.

The beast began to refuse to stand trial. The crowd was growing restless, and one man stepped forward and attempted to cut the beasts throat with a knife. We were quick to respond, healing his wounds so that he would not die in such a way until we could decide on what was proper and just.

It was then that the crowd began to grow even more hostile toward us. We attempted to remain calm but the crowd was intent on seeing us as the enemies. Eternal Flame Adad gave the beast multiple chances to decide his fate - to recant his threats and be let free. Each time the beast refused. It was then that the monster demanded a trial by combat, to which the blood thirsty crowd seemed to embrace with a dark, barbaric and evil glee.

I attempted to stop this by bringing him to the Sanctuary Watch to be arrested for his stated crimes. Yet he ran to the Arena and therefore Eternal Flame Adad retired to the Last Stand along with the other Keepers to prepare blessings for battle.

I arrived at the arena to find many already there and the beast in the center making demands. Demands were made to give him weapons and armor, but Keeper Boron - who had his items - was at the Last Stand. He was given a great sword and a suit of armor by those in attendance.

The crowd seemed to wish the death of Eternal Flame Adad - in favor of a monster who worshiped a dark god and ate human flesh. Some of which you might consider holy men and women. I was dumbstruck by how evil had infested all of their hearts and the thirst for blood fueled their thoughts.

It was then that Eternal Flame Adad, Keeper Boron and Keeper Ma'el arrived to join me. Eternal Flame Adad then was accused of cheating despite the rules being made clear that he could use his blessings in battle. Such was the will of the crowd to see Eternal Flame Adad crippled in the battle and die. He was, of course, as you know, victorious - such is to be expected by those who embrace darkness and challenge the light.

We then attempted to purify his body so that whatever small fraction of humanity that flowed through his veins could be set free, to not find itself trapped in the nine hells or the abyss suffering for all eternity for its crimes. It was our will and our way, to ensure that his body could never be raised as an undead creature. Yet, the crowd demanded that this not take place and stole the body. I can only imagine what vile things they have done with it - perhaps even as I write this he is undead stalking once again, fueled with darkness rather than an inner fire.

I ask you, Haldor - what would you have done had Eternal Flame Adad lost? Would you have allowed such an evil beast to roam free? Is this your idea of justice? Why did you not raise your voice against the bloodlust of the crowd? Did they not see that this was the will of a dark god - Malar? Did they not feel the taint and corruption poisoning their very souls?

This is not the act of civilized men. Civilized men have courts and tribunals. We do not battle to the death like animals in the wild.

Through all this we have suffered great injustice. Even as we sought to prove his evil by showing the vile artifacts that he had in his possession we were persecuted. None cared. They were only fueled by blind hatred - the domain of Bane the Tyrant.

We have destroyed the evil artifacts that he had in his possession as well as most of his other belongings. All of it was consumed by the Purifying Fires of Kossuth so that it may never again fall into the hands of those who would use them for evil. So that it may never again corrupt the world.

I ask you, Haldor why did you not raise your voice? If he had won the battle would you have demanded that we hand his objects of wickedness back to him? Would you have set him free to once again feast upon Human Flesh? What would you have done?

It has been made clear to us that this city is somehow cursed. That those within it are tempted into wickedness, evil and sin - against all logic and reason. Never before have I seen so many fall under the temptation to stand against the light and embrace the darkness. Never before could I have imagined, but now that I have seen it with my own eyes, I wonder if this city even has a hope of survival.

Hoaradin Delorin Keeper of the Purifying Flame

Hoaradin,

Please stop misunderstanding our words and wasting your time writing long letters filled with what we did not do or plan to do. We dislike Malar and his servants as much as you do, but because you would be incapable of putting him on trial due to the fact that neither the Hoaran temple and Upper Sanctuary would place him on trial, we suggested a duel in the arena instead, which was clearly the only other legal course of action that you and your allies could take against him. Without that duel, the only action you could do is slay him in the wilds or in the other settlements.

Now, at the duel. We never wanted the see half orc triumph, but as honorable people we suggested that he be given his weapon and armor back, unless they are corrupted in nature and if so, he should be given a mundane set instead.

Though if he had triumphed, we would allow him to go unless another wishes to challenge him, but we would certainly not return the corrupted equipment.

As for the matter of trust, let me tell you that we have completely no reason to trust you or your fellow servants of Kossuth. All of you have only proven to be fanatical followers of Kossuth; a Lord who cares only of flame. When you speak of Justice, you ought to know that concept is not supported by your Lord. When you speak of purification of Evil, you ought to know that your Lord likely enjoys watching about everyone burn to death, even the innocent.

Secondly, there is Eternal Flame Adad, well I dare to say that you can find any Paladin in Sanctuary and he would say the same as Alabaster. Now though, we clearly saw that Kossuth still guides and grants him power. Thus, this only adds to the fact that your Lord only cares about Fire and he is willing to support even the corrupt and depraved as long as they serve his will.

I say it is time you question your Lord and learn the truth. The truth is that all your words about Justice, Fighting evil and corruption are all simply contrary to your Lord's true will and the only reason he supports you is because you wish to use the element of fire to achieve your goals.

Change your faith and find a much better Lord before you try to change Sanctuary and serve on the Council.

Haldor Longhand

[This letter is hand delivered to the Tyrran Temple. The writing is in a hand that seems to favor large, bold words, and a stylized flourish.]

Haldor,

I am suppressing my anger immensely as I write these words, for I do not wish to write something that cannot be taken back.

We had every right to slay a monster such as he in the street. Had you offered we would have taken him to the Temple of Tyr to be judged. You did not. That was a possibility, but you did not offer and made no attempt to do so.

We did not attempt to deprive the monster of weapons nor armor, as I stated I had none to give and Keeper Boron who had yet to arrive, was carrying all of his things some of which we knew were corrupted by evil.

I will tell you plainly, that monster would have never left the arena alive. Each of us there would have sacrificed our own lives to kill him had he triumphed in battle. To allow such a monster - and make no mistake that is what he was - free is an uncomprehensible action. To allow him freedom would be to have allowed him to slay more innocents, to carry out more acts of wickedness, and to once again feast upon human flesh. There was no other outcome but his death or our deaths. I would not have allowed it.

Finally, do not write to me of what Kossuth is or is not. You do not understand my Lord, and are obviously poisoned by the nature of the lies spread about him. I would not dare to insult you by pretending to know more about your god, yet you insult me greatly by doing that to me. Know well that every word that passes from my lips or flows from my pen is his divine will, every action that I take is in his name. He speaks through me. Therefore, whatever you think you know is irrelevant - what I say is what matters, for it is my actions that shape this church.

Also, know well that I search each and every man of this faith more closely than I search any other for signs of wickedness and corruption. I have yet to see Eternal Flame Adad commit an act of wickedness. Perhaps he has faltered in the past, but the Purifying Flames of Kossuth shall redeem him if that is the case. Should I see him do such I shall personally deal with it.

Do not insult me by suggesting that I should change my faith again. I do not make such insults to you, and I demand the same respect in return.

Hoaradin Delorin Keeper of the Purifying Flame

Hoaradin,

Enough of this, I believe it is time for me to be blunt with you. I do not doubt your intentions at all and I know you wish to protect the people of Sanctuary by fighting such evil threats.

You truly need to learn the truth though and the truth is that the ends do not justify the means. Only goodness can come of good deeds and only evil can come from evil deeds. At any moment that you commit an evil or dishonorable deed in a bid to protect innocent people and to fight Evil, you are no longer doing that, but instead you are only fighting for your own selfish thoughts of vengeance.

Secondly, how dare you claim that every word you utter and every deed you do is any god's divine will? No mortal can or should make these claims. It reeks of utter selfish pride and depravity. Not even I will claim that I do exactly what my Lord wishes of me, though I can only try and hope that I do.

Men like you are unfit to sit on the Council or government of any city. Cease your ways now and change, or I will instantly tell everyone the truth about you and your fanaticism, but mark my words; I will stop men like you from getting any power in this city.

Haldor Longhand

[This letter is hand delivered to the Tyrran Temple. The writing is in a hand that seems to favor large, bold words, and a stylized flourish.]

Haldor,

It is clear to me now that the darkness of this place has begun to cling to your soul. Though you cannot see it, you do not stand in the light of Kossuth's Purifying Flame. My heart feels nothing but pity for you.

Never have I done such horrible things. You know this as the truth. I know you would not say these things of your own free will. Can't you see it? Can't you see what this place is turning you into?

There is only one Path to Redemption, Haldor - seek out the light of the Purifying Flame. The taint upon your soul shall be cleansed and you reborn as a new, free man. You must do this before it is too late.

I shall pray for you, as I pray for all people of this city who have fallen into darkness. The light of the Purifying Flame awaits and welcomes you should you choose to embrace it. I pray that you shall.

Hoaradin Delorin Keeper of the Purifying Flame
