Can't enter the pit because there's no dialogue placable or anything around anymore. Wondering if it has been disabled or someone managed to destroy the placable?

Try looking at the NPCs loitering around in the Dunwarren Ruins for a hint.

Old Sanctuary Engineer now gives the quest.
