Movement Penalty from Upper/Lower stairwell

Upon going to upper or lower, there is a message that appears in your combat log that states something to the effect that walking up these steps would make even a young man winded.

I think there should be a movement penalty for a short time after this.

Here is my suggestion, depending on the weight you carry (taking into consideration your str modifier and con modifier), your penalty should vary in length. If you are a 6 str halfling carrying 300lbs of stuff, you're going to be not only mighty encumbered, but also dead tired from hauling that up the stairs.

But if you're a 21str half-orc with only 100lbs of stuff, you're not going to be AS winded as the 6str halfling.

This creates two unique dynamics.

1.) people in pvp are forced to slow down when using this transition point through IC reasons. Meaning that it gives the chaser a chance to catch up if someone bolts up the stairs. It also prevents people from abusing transitions (which they shouldn't be anyway).

2.) people who are encumbered, might think twice about making what would, in real life, be a really difficult and long trip when they don't have to. I mean, c'mon, if you know you're going to be reduced to 6% movement speed at the top of the stairs, you might consider other RP means of dealing with your items/bodies/loot before ascending to Upper.

To keep it somewhat fair, I would also like some kind of penalty at the bottom of the stair too....though I'm not sure what.

I LOVE THIS IDEA! CAPS LOCK HELPS ILLUSTRATE THAT!

No really. This is a really really awesome and easy solution to people running up and down the stairs during PVP!

No, thank you.

If someone is running up or down the stairs during PvP they are cheating and should be reported to a DM. Of course, there should be a DM there for PvP, anyways.

Besides, if we're gonna give movement penalties for that, we should also for not resting, not eating, walking to Slaal'teesh, and the like.

I'm afraid I have to vote no.

Well, a good idea in concept, but for those of us who take a half hour to load between anyway, that would act as a serious annoyance.

"It will slow down my delivery quest spam!"

<_<

I have only seen one person actually give a reason why they don't like it. It's not like it has to be extremely long in duration, and just enough to only let you walk, not run, for 10-20 seconds. Not really that huge of annoyance unless your spamming or pvping. And even if you're not breaking pvp rules, you can still go up or down the staircase. This makes the time it takes to get up, or down, more realistic.

Rather than this, how about we reinvent the In-between area, so that the transition between, say, Lower and In-between is not that far. Then, provide a series of spiraling paths going upwards representing the stairs, and ending at the gate itself? This way, you could fight your way up the stairs if you needed to.

That sounds pretty good...

Emryuk likes this idea.

I like lovethepup's idea best. If we change anything at all.

Or we could setup five or so transitions that require loading for people to fight through. A narrow cooridor of traps, goblins, and narrow slits for spears and arrows to be shot through at the unsuspecting traveler.

...

Actually LTS's idea is pretty awesome and I like it more.

This suggestion adds nothing, I'm afraid!

Well not until you actually add something. So go on. Re-make the In-between!

The area already takes a day and a half for it to load, if you make 5 more transitions i might as well take the other way to lower.

I think it's fine as is. If you want to fight on the stairs, go ahead and walk past the transition "door".

A95 The area already takes a day and a half for it to load, if you make 5 more transitions i might as well take the other way to lower.

That was sarcasm, sorry I forgot to include the [sarcasm] tag to it.

I'm all for LTS's approach to the problem though.

I'm afraid my original idea has been lost in the perpetual gravitation towards the topic of pvp. I honestly was just saying to have a 5-10 second speed penalty once you exit the stair area to express the effect of having actually climbed the stairs.

The pvp mention was simply another thing I happened to notice as a benefit.

Maybe just put a 'slow' trap at the top. Like that oil slick thing that happens in the sewer quest. It doesn't last that long but gets the point across.

Honestly though, all the suggestion adds is annoyance for the sake of realism.

If you PvP, you're going to need a DM anyway, so its no problem at all. A DM can see if someone abuses the transition, or not.

I'll abuse YOUR transition.

alright...dead suggestion.
