Anyone know a good source of information for general lore on goblins and goblinoids relating to goblins?
Goblin lore and little known quirks?
It's really hard to come by. If you want to know specifics about Maglubiyet, try wikipedia.
As for goblins in Sanctuary and the Gruzzle Tribe, I know a bit of their lore, so specify and I'll see what I can do for ya!
Yes! Any information you can give me about the local goblin lore/make-up would be great. I figure my goblin would at least understand these things mildly without me having to find out IG, so the general information you know about them would be MUCH appreciated.
I already searched far and wide across the intraweb for Magubiyetileaer.....ect, lore, very sparse and vague. Maybe that's just how goblins are? Not sure, but I'm trying to do more than the typical lack of prepositions and filth goblin, having a hard time bringing him to life.
Once again, ANY help you give would be muchly appreciated.
Buy/steal "Slayer's Guide to Goblins". I wouldn't call it 100% canon but they're good ressources, offering RP hints and all that. Mongoose Publishing, I think.
Catch me on IRC sometime, or I'll put it up here after a long nap and I get RL stuff done.
The following is relatively basic information that a well informed character might know, or which might be useful in rolling up a goblin character.
Goblins in EfU are evil monsters that tend to band together into large, swiftly breeding tribes. There are probably about a hundred major tribes in the Sanctuary/Dark Lake region, and countless more minor bands and family units. They excel at surviving in difficult situations, mostly by their ability to eat virtually anything and breed extremely quickly.
Colonel Spitfire is something of a well known local goblin hero, and a persistent thorn in the feet of many of Sanctuary's adventurers (and he's been known to orchestrate a few major raids on the town itself). He's notorious for his mockery of his enemies and tendency to develop overly elaborate strategies and tactical maneuvers.
As many goblins have been slaves along-side humans/dwarves/other surfacer races in drow slave mines, Sanctuary did traditionally exhibit a slightly less hostile attitude towards goblins than most surface settlements. From early on in the settlement's history, there's been a few goblins that have been tolerated - living in the alleyways and consuming spare refuse, and so on. The goblin Grulpo sold the stones used to execute criminals for a long time, and his "poetry" is still faithfully published by Ebeneezrea Dwurrowroot. The goblin Gobbler for several years ran a successful business in Lower in which rat hunters sold him stew and he in turn fed much of Lower with highly inexpensive, surprisingly delicious rat stew.
Less than a year ago, Gobbler's tribe (under the leadership of Chief Grizzle) were driven out from the Spire area by the influx of vampires there and invited by the Sanctuary Lower Council to come to Lower and help aid in its defense, if they agreed to follow basic rules. The tribe squated in the alleyways south of Lower, and over time their population exploded. Other unaffiliated, exiled goblins also sought the sanctuary of the relatively peaceful Gruzzle tribe settlement. Over time, a band of kobolds calling themselves the Shadow Tribe built a settlement of their own also. Finally, an enormous maur (underdark giant) named Mresh moved into the area and become a sort of king and conflict arbitrer.
Eventually the Gruzzle tribe grew too large, and in response to various affiliated and non-affiliated goblins committing crimes, a large group of adventurers attacked the settlement and wiped it out. It is rumored a few goblin survivors are making their home in the remote sewers beneath Lower.
Shortly after the battle, the ruined camp became haunted by highly dangerous goblin zombies/spirits, but this problem too appears to have faded very recently.
Another goblin tribe that a knowledgable goblin PC might be aware of is the Bone Watcher tribe. This is a tribe of exiled goblin necromancers and shamans who make their home in a deep lizard boneyard. For a long time the goblin tribes (which hunt the deep lizards for food), were troubled by angry, dangerous deep lizard spirits. However, the Bone Watcher tribe was formed and they concern themselves with watching over the remains of the deep lizards and placating the spirits with gifts and chants of appeasement. The position of this tribe in the eyes of most other goblins is that of superstitious awe, as they are notorious for their secretive necromantic powers. The tribe itself generally remains aloof from the near constant goblin wars and rivalries.
There's plenty more EfU specific goblin lore, but I think some of it might be crossing into the realm of spoilers.
A player who wishes to play a character that belongs to one of these recognized goblin tribes would need to send in a brief application (basically just a heads up to the DM crew).
That's excellent, thank you. I learned much from that.
Could you be so kind and do the same for kobolds, please? I love playing them (badly, since I am not a big friend of bloodthirsty evil characters). It might help me (and others) a lot.
Most of the kobold stuff I've done has had to do with the Shadow Tribe, which is all pretty spoiler-intensive.
I suppose most people in Sanctuary would have heard rumors to the effect that there's a kobold tribe that worships a dragon, and that they squatted in Lower for a long while, before eventually establishing an embassy and moving into Sslal'teesh (a lizardfolk city that was at war with Sanctuary for a time).
There's also the self-titled Lord Bunge, who sells kobold-brewed potions outside the Upper Gate. It's rumored he's an escaped slave from Traensyr himself, and used to be employed by the deceased Sheriff Walters to polish boots - before he ate them all.
Most kobolds are of course totally savage, blood-thirsty monsters that attack on sight, but Sanctuary hasn't had many problems with large kobold armies.
There's also a couple of IG books on kobolds, I believe.
Wow, that was such an awesome detailed post. Thanks a lot Howland, that really helps a ton. I felt a little guilty geting to know some of that stuff without ever having been involved in it, but it was very interesting to hear a little story of some of the lesser known areas of EFU. I never knew anything about that deep lizard graveyard, or what purpose it REALLY served,...cause we all know you can't even move a goblin terd without stumbling across something that's had real PC/DM storytelling with it at some time in the past.
Howland just pwnt me. I've got nothing to add.
That information was quite valuable Howland. If I may be so bold: Copy that and drop it in the Realms Lore section. I'm sure it could be of use to many in the future as well.
I'm not planning on making a goblin anytime soon, but something reminded me of the good times had while playing them so I started thinking about it. Thus, I would request that the info herein be placed either here...

... for posterity's sake! Yes, I know the search is there for a reason for the smarty-pants out there. But so is the section about monster/slaver races in the Underdark.
Thanks in advance!
