Letter left at The Watch House

To whom this may concern,

I write firstly to offer my most sincere and heartfelt condolences for the six watchmen heavily wounded this day in their staunch defence of the tollgate leading to New Dunwarren. Though offered several chances to leave peaceably and allow the tollgate to be dismantled it was their prerogative to stand firm. It was with great reluctance that I was forced to such extreme measures. I am told that they all live, though may well bear the scars of the altercation for some time.

Know that this unfortunate set of circumstances could have been avoided. For a great length of time now New Dunwarren has attempted to lobby for the removal of this tollgate. While all others have been abandoned, ours has apparently stood firm. Time and again The Council of Old Sanctuary made it their decision to ignore us, and assume we would simply cower and accept their rule once more.

I pray now that this incident can be put behind all of us. It is the wish of New Dunwarren only to aid Old Sanctuary in whatever ways it can. We by no way wish to be seen as a hostile force that threatens the safety of Sanctuary. Nonetheless, I fear I could stand by no longer and let our citizens risk the dangerous trip through the infested streets of the former goblin town and Lower simply as they had not the gold to pay this toll. Too much blood stained the hands of The Council in this matter for me to turn a blind eye any longer.

I expect nor I suppose require any reply, save for word on the wellbeing of the injured men and their families. I leave you only to ponder the words, and once again offer my apologies for the action that was forced upon us due to the inabilities of your Council.
