Public Letter of Intent on Behalf of the Sanctuary Library
Citizens of all Sanctuaries,
Though beleaguered by enemies and constantly harassed by the hostile environment of the Depths, we are, nevertheless, surrounded by the Great Unknown that is the Underdark. The Depths are the home to great, untold secrets - it is our duty as thinking peoples to uncover them, and put them to the use of our community, lest we recede back into the deepest alcoves of ignorance and disgrace.
It is with this spirit that I, Absolom Dar Ehring, recently restored to my position as head of the Library - occupied by my good friend and esteemed fellow citizen Varlam Nikitovich, during my illness-related absence - hereby announce the opening of positions in the research staff of this fine institution. As of now, the Library's laboratory is but a naked room - but with due time and the diligent work of Sanctuary's best minds, we can achieve great things and produce true science under the auspices of the library.
An outline of privileges of the research staff follows:
- Members of the research staff shall be granted access to the Library's laboratory, as well as unrestricted access to the Vault, wherein we shall store the rare tomes of our collection.
- Members of the staff will be able to present their own projects before the Library - upon deliberation by a council of peers, these projects may be adopted for pursuit by the Library.
- Members of the staff shall have access to the research notes and progress reports of all ongoing projects under the auspices of the Sanctuary Library.
Since no privilege comes without an associated responsibility, the Library shall demand of its members that they do not carry on research that is of dangerous or sensitive nature without the close collaboration of the Spellguard, and that they serve the community of Sanctuary first and foremost in their studies. As time and resources allow, it is also my hope that the Library shall afford its members enough space to conduct their own personal research, as long as it does not breach any articles of Sanctuarian law, and yields productive results that will enable us to continue into the future as a stronger and more united community.
The requirements to partake in the research efforts are simple: One must be in good health, agree to follow Sanctuarian laws and decrees as well as working for the benefit of Sanctuary's people first and foremost. Research conducted under the auspices of the Library shall never be used or withheld for political gain. To become a member of the research team, one must be interviewed by the Library staff and deemed an appropriate addition to the team. Ability to work alongside peers, as well as intellectual respect for all of those who work within the Library - be they fellow researcher or a simple janitor is a must. Those who cannot work as part of a team need not apply - this is not your place.
Those who wish to meet with me may send their letters to the Library, and I will see to them to the best of my ability, as soon as possible.
- Absolom Dar Ehring Curator and Chief of Library Staff
