I had a brief chat with Caddies about emoting skill use. I wish I could have chatted him up more, but my attention needed to be on the task at hand. As a PnPer, I think I'm good...but as an NWNer I think at times I need a lil' spit and polish. I appreciate input such as Caddie's aid, as I think it helps me to better things for me as well as for the players and DMs around me.
So...My question is this: What are DM opinions on skill checks and skill use? When should they be used? Is emoting ok? I am also curious about what DMs feel reactions should be to a skill check (example: If I use intimidate and roll an "X" what should the reaction be? Could discipline be used to counter?). What if skill checking rolls will tip my hand? (I roll bluff, even suceeding I have indicated I am likely lying...Can I emote fidgeting? Or do some DMs feel this is metagaming?
As I said, Caddies was a big help in tuning me in to what I could do better. I feel your answers will benefit me, as well as many others who have likely wondered the same things. You may even find this warrants a "skill checks" thread here. It could help us to better fill out the DMs visions of how players should play to create a level playing base for all.
