A good suggestion, or a bad one?

I suggest a mechanism to make the metal shortage more interesting. If (and this would obviously be an IC action) a communal furnace was set up, could it be arranged that ore collected on quests, found out in the dark etc., could be dropped into it, and the results tallied every week? Even better would be if all basic metal items (weapons and armour) could be dropped in as well, for a smaller value. There are a few quests already that hand out lumps of raw materials, it would be nice if there were a coded reason to lug them back. Once upon a time in an evil jelly cult far far away, Sherry set up a similar idea for *spoilers*, and it worked well.

There could be fun minimal DM supervised quests where people slowly lug chunks of metal or metal ore across the server, beset by villains on all sides. Sort of like "Wheels of Fear", but without trucks. Or nitro-glycerine. Or high drama and good cinematography.

I am fully in support of this, for completely unbiased reasons.

:P

This sounds like a cool idea! I'm not sure if I can make the furnace differentiate and store database information on metal items thrown in or not, but we'll see if this comes up in a future update.

I just realized- wouldn't you need metal to make the furnace? Zurkhwood furnaces wouldn't work. >_>

Either way, I decided to add it in the next module update.

Sir Bedevere: Ah, yes.. but can you not also build furnaces out of stone? Peasant 1: Oh.. oh yes...

I'm sure you could build a small furnace out of the metal that I've got stashed away in my office to ward off the occasional mob of angry citizens. A small one, but a furnace nontheless!

This is a phenomenal idea, as it ties EVERYBODY into the major plot. And we won't be wandering around aimlessly anymore searching for a non-existant (or too damn hard to find, at any rate) source of ore. Which, honestly, isn't that much fun.

One major question that should be considered- what is the payoff for bringing back metal? Experience? Coupons for buying metal products at cheaper prices? Cold, hard gold coins? A pat on the back? Free booze? While it is ultimately up to the DMs, ideas would probably help.

In an environment where gold coins seems to flow like water, and iron becomes rare - iron could be used as currency.

"That'll be two iron slivers," says Rak.

"And then the good people of the Sanctuary make their weapons, armor, pickaxes and even doorknobs out of gold realizing they wasted all of their harder, more useful material up by making it into currency..." Says the kobold Bard Tak as he tells the tale of how they came upon their new home, the Sanctuary.

I'm not sure what I can offer in terms of reward, since it is a charity effort and that it's hard to keep track of who throws what in. Though if I personally notice people throwing stuff in I'll keep note of them for the future!

Free booze?

Just roll with this one. >.>

I think we're all missing what's really important here, and that's the pun in the title.

Thanks, Scrappa. Thrappa.

I mean, 1 experience for every pound of metal. ((That full plate means 50 experience points....))

lovethesuit I think we're all missing what's really important here, and that's the pun in the title.

ZOMG!

I didn't even notice that at first... -_-

I'm so clueless....

...Any ways, this is a great idea. I'd love to make a character who runs a slaver-mining camp!

Scrappa, you coward.

Just as a quick note on forges:

you don't need anything too elaborate however what you do need is fuel and a bellows or method of pumping air into your furnance so as to increase the tempreture to the various melting points of your metals or ores.

A simple furnance can be nothing more than a hole in the ground with a clay kiln on top. This is what bronze age people used and is well within the achievable means of people from Sanctuary. The Dark lake at low tide can provide the mud/clay for you kiln. Zurkwood or even better - coal - would do for fuel. A bellows is another reletively easy item to construct and since there is a pig farm, skins and leather are easily obtainable.

Maybe make it from stone? In fact, I'm thinking it's a better material than metal, given the insulating properties and that it melts at a higher temperature.

Just an uneducated guess.

*points at his previous post on how to make a furnace*

It wasn’t me LTS! It was edited by anti-pun forces of darkness! *Waves fist at the sky* Damn you all, I hope you are punished severely!

Seriously? Someone else edited the title? Hmm. :(

Finally. That horrible pun was pain-full [HAHAHA get it? Full of pain!!] to look at. If you're not Shakespeare don't use puns.

Righty, well the unstable gnomish furnace has been added and this thread doesn't seem to be going anywhere. >_>
