Dead Gods

I met a person today who knew his god was dead, and still prayed and got spells. For my extremely limited knowledge of how things work I am completely lost  . All I know is Gods grant spells to clerics, god dies...... then what? From what I understand gods arn't immortal, they can die. So I guess I need a clarification on how their followers still get spells granted from a being that has ceased to exist.

Gods are in-fact 'immortal', or at least they can never truly die with any kind of finality. It can reach a point where they are no longer able to grant spells or exert any influence over the prime material plane however. This has occured a great many times in the past with the defeat of some notable gods, like Bane / Bhaal / Moander.

That said, gods who 'die' do not always stay dead. Some 'dead' gods are supposidly even able to offer power to a very small number of their followers, and other gods will even grant powers in the name of these dead god (for various reasons).

Okay thanks for the info.
