Greatest game ever?

I was just browsing the BBC News site and came upon this article:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/6261546.stm

It has named "Zelda" as the greatest game ever!?! :? WTF?

Zelda? I am astounded! I mean I would have never, in any stretch of the imagination, thought to put Zelda in this catagory.

Quite frankly, it's a crock of sh*t. -edit- maybe that's a bit harsh but I never liked it.

There are far better games than that travesty. Half-Life, Doom, Quake & Halo for 1st person shooters. BALDURS GATE series hands down! And of course, what we all play: Never Winter Nights.

Bah...the pole was probably conducted on some pliable fools who were more likely given a rigged survey anyway.

Zelda is the greatest. Especially Zelda on the SNES, A Link to the Past. I still play it now because its so incredible!

Deku Tree shall eat you in your sleep.

Zelda is the pwn.

Zelda is great, but hardly the best! :O

Chrono Trigger ftw <.<

Zelda *is* pretty damn good. Ocarina of Time rocked N64 t' death.

Planescape: Torment

Planeteer Planescape: Torment

Yeah

that rocked.

8)

I never finished it though :?

Fallout, bitches.

VietCong was also a ripper as a single player but it shone as a mutli-player shooter!

I'm with you Dan, fallout rocked. Hard. Freakin Hard.

(Ahhh, my wasted youth)

Zelda the rules its the only video game besides EFU Where I had to use my brain. I beat Zelda Ocarina of Time and majoras mask so Pwnt.

A LINK TO THE PAST BEATS OCARINA AND MAJORA'S MASK HANDS DOWN.

Zelda is the one N64 game, besides mario, where I totally fell in luv with.

I especially liked the horsie in the N64 Zelda games!

NWN 1 Can't think of any other game that I stood playing, almost daily for 4 years.

We all know that Final Fantasy VIII, with a plot built upon the immense theme of romantic love, was the best game ever made.

Squall and Rinoa, forever.

ok come on we all know Zelda OOT set the basis for most adventure games to come after it thats how good it was and thats why it makes most of the zelda games after it look not as good as they really are since its hard to stand up to the legend itself.

Baldur's Gate Series. Nothing else.

And face it people, Neverwinter Nights sucks. I hate it to my black core. I only play it because I get to play EFU.

Agreed with coldburn it really really sucks. THe only thing that got me playing was Efu! I wish the dms made there own MMorpg that was only EFU!

Haquin NWN 1 Can't think of any other game that I stood playing, almost daily for 4 years.

Buy yourself a seat.

Anyway! HL, HL2, HL2:EP1, Crash Bandicoot, Grand Theft Auto III, Gran Turismo 4, Just Cause and, of course, NWN. All of those would easily make it onto my list and I could think of a few more if I took a few minutes. NWN and Just Cause are probably at the top (NWN has kept me hooked for so long but Just Cause has infinite parachutes).

I'm sorry, but Zelda is not the best game ever. I just can't agree with that. I mean, seriously now, Silent Hill (the series, and each individual game) just pwns Zelda. I mean, who can't love a mind bending horror plot as masterfully crafted as that which the folks at Konami came up with?

Zelda, is good, yes, but not that good. There are plenty of games out there that just slaughter it, hands down.

(Besides, Zelda would fall into a puddle of wussie after 10 minutes in the nightmare hospital of Silent Hill 1 or 2, we all know it.)

LBA 2. There's nothing more needed to be said.

Shadowrun Yoshi's Island Unreal Tournament Deus Ex Baldur's Gate Series Flashback Vampire: The Masquerade Monkey's Island series Sam & Max Grim Fandango

The Day of the Tentacle & Monkey Island make my top ten.

System Shock 2

Operation Flashpoint. Max Payne. Deux Ex. KotOR Civilization 2. Unreal Tournement Wolfenstein 3D

Fallout 1&2 BG series PS:T Monkey Island series KotOR Final Fantasy Tactics

My top 10 are:

1 - Baldurs Gate Series [god how I miss 2nd Ed D&D :( ]

2 - Half-Life

3 - Computer Ambush [a lot of you won't even know this game as it came out in 1983 but it rocked!]

4 - Betrayel at Krondor

5 - Combat Missions : Beyond Overlord

6 - VietCong

7 - Neverwinter Nights

8 - Diablo [it was amazing for it's day]

9 - Pirates

10 - Wizardry [yes the original version]

Squall and Rinoa Forever We all know that Final Fantasy VIII, with a plot built upon the immense theme of romantic love, was the best game ever made.

Squall and Rinoa, forever.

QFT.

Zelda is good, the Prince of Persia series (excluding Warrior Within) was better, Halo 3 is/going to be the best!

'Nuff said.

Your tastes suck, no offense.

Arcanum or System Shock 1.

[Come on, that's not flaming! Merely a fact. I will prevent hate by using a smiley: :D ]

I will spare us further fact stating by saying this in the name of efu community:

Obviously, you have never played [here insert title of any game mentioned in this topic so far or any other game, for that matter].

LBA 2!

Your tastes suck, no offense.

None taken, but I still stand by what I said earlier, the prince of persia series was pretty cool, not half as good as some of the other titles out there but still good.

As for Arcanum, I never really liked that game for some odd reason.

Arcanum was interesting, but poorly made.

That was the par for the course with Troika, sadly.

Steampunk games always are interesting, Arcanum was a blast to play through, a shame the MP mode was pretty non-exsistent and the campaign unable to be played with more than one person.

warlords 1 UFO enemy unknown Final Fantasy VII - materia system is the all time best FF system ever!

I'm a junkie for any video game that is either a:

1.) First person shooter where... a.) one is killing zombies. b.) one is shooting up WW2 combat zones filled with nazis. c.) one is killing all kinds of crazy shit in a survival/horror themed environment.

2.) Real Time Strategy that uses... a.) Space monsters. b.) WW2 Nazi smashing.

Favorites games are the Resident Evil Series, Medal of Honor Games, Starcraft/Warcraft, Doom 3, and of course, NWN.

My favorite game though, is obviously still Final Fantasy 8...

I see a pattern emerging here, Sherry... :P

The best game ever hasn't been made yet, but it would be something like this...

A First-Person shooter zombie/armaggedon/cyberpunk survival game with a multiplayer mode similar to a MMORPG without the frills and turn-offs of World of Warcraft, Everquest, etc. It was you, what little ammunition you had, vehicles running on the fumes of the leftover gasoline, and a few scattered outposts. There'd be survivalist factions of all kinds run mostly by PCs. The gameplay, I hope, would be a lot like the early days of Planetside. To run properly, there would need to be DM-esque players (possibly payed as a job) that helped run little stories and such for each of the settlements, factions, or random PC parties and weave worldwide plots to tie the game together.

Garem, you have an excellent game concept there. Now go find yourself a company that will develop it, market the game and make yourself a fortune!

Perhaps run the game along the lines of the film "The Omega Man" with more zombies etc.

If a game that everyone one liked was made the world would end because no one would do anything but play it. But Zelda is in my top 10. Also in it are Halo (only the first one), Chrono cross, Super mario 64, NWN, Baldurs gate (never played the second one), and many many more then 10. In fact to be safe Id better make a top 100. And Im going to go out on a limb and say Final Fantasy is boring. Yes I know it is almost exactly like Chrono Cross, but Final Fantasy only kept my attention for a grand total of 3 hours untill I decided it sucked. This is my opinion, please dont kill me! :D

- Planescape - Total War (any and all) - Baldur's Gate 2 - System Shock 2 - Europa Universalis I, II and III - Zelda - Alex the Kid - GOLDEN AXE WARRIOR

"Dungeon Keeper" and "Syndicate" are teh w1n!

My love goes out to many games, especially Baldur's Gate I, my first lover in both computer games, roleplaying, and the Forgotten Realms. But I must need to make mention of Battlefield 1942 for hours and hours on end of well-constructed maps, balanced and simple gameplay, and, when the right community is found to play with consistently, a simply grand experience. I spent the better part of four months racing across Iwo Jima, Aberdeen, and Omaha Beach with naught but a knife, a medical kit, and squirl-like reflexes. Zen Knifer 4 lyfe.

MadCaddies rocks my world.

Something that everyone who wants to know great PC games should play is the Thief series (Dark Project, Metal Age, Deadly Shadows). Enchanting story, very good atmosphere build with both visuals (especially with light and shadows) and sounds.

I suppose in today's standards only the last one is still visually pleasing, and it can be played without knowing the two first parts even if it is a trilogy.

Well I don't think I could put any one game I've played at the top. But I'm gonna throw X-COM out there. Loved that game.

Gotta agree with sherry and dan.

Resident evil series ruled! pop that sucker in the ps with the lights off and sorround sound ewww.. Fallout 1&2 was a killer survival game, and besides where else could you pimp a whore in a post nuclear era? and as far as baldurs gate, it was the foundation for everything we are doing now which is chewing our nails and cursing the screen waiting for efu to come back on line. Come on howland, i need my fix big daddy please...please

Kotenku Zelda is great, but hardly the best! :O

Chrono Trigger ftw <.<

Hell yeah for Chrono Trigger! That game was soo cool because it has like 11 different endings which was unheard of on SNES (I think it was the only one). There were side quests and special things you could do if you changed the time stream in certain locations.

I played this game to death!

If you are not considering graphics, storyline, plot, mechanics, fighting ability, the sheer diversity of foes and the incredible world for N64 Zelda, and thinking of an epic hack and slash, then you are Wrong! Zelda is among the best Dungeon puzzle adventures, fighting ability, tactics, it made you think when on other games all you did was rely on reflexes and smashing ability. In fact, I still play this game from time to time, amazed that is still rivals that of other games I have. There are side quests, and main quests, you can fish, you can shoot at things, and it was a perfect modicum of challenge, suspense, Reality, Dramatization, and so on and so forth. For the time period it was made it, and compared to the games of today, I think it is still among the best games ever.

Rivaling that of the EFU server.

The entire Total War series and Battlefield 1942...and NWN of course.. :P

NWN, BG, and the Thief Series :D

Leather Goddesses of Phobos. Infocom FTW!

Not much to add here, I can pretty much find all of my favorite games ever mentioned here somewhere. Zelda OoT, the BG series, Planescape: Torment, the Thief series, Quake -- I've played all of these more than is healthy. But there's a pattern here, people are mentioning almost exclusively adventure/roleplaying/1st person games, plus some real time strategy apparently.

I can't believe no one's mentioned any turn-based strategy games. Especially Master of Orion II, Civilization II and SMAC (Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri) have to be among the cream of the cream when it comes to computer strategy games of any kind. I'm still amazed by the outrageous knowledge of science, scifi and philosophy that the creators of SMAC, Brian Reynolds in particular, possess -- some of my all time favorite quotes come from that game. (Check out http://www.generationterrorists.com/quotes/smac.html for a list of the quotes). And what other turn-based computer strategy game has had such an incredibly rich world that short stories and novels have been written from it?

Edit: Dan mentioned Civ II! Props to Dan! :D

Single player: Fallout 2

Multiplayer: M.A.X. (Mechanized Assault and eXploration, turn based strategy. Still great, after 13 years <3)

My Fav's

- Knights of the old republic was pretty cool.

- Jade Empire was decent.

- Baldurs Gate 2: Shadows of Amn rocked. Number 1 and Throne of Bhaal wasnt nearly as good.

- Max Payne was VERY entertaining.

- Vampires the masc. is the best vampire related game ever, and still awsome rp aspects.

- Morrowind (with lots of mods installed) was one of those games you'll just sit down and puzzle with day in and day out. Rocked, btw.

... yeah

EfU is the best computer game out there...

HoTU is the second best-I think it's the only thing BioWare did right.... Maybe I just have a thing for deep, dangerous places?

Guild Wars is decent, but the playerbase is not as l33t as they think. There are only about 500 o-k people on the game.

Oblivion is awesome-it's basically a less complex game with more or less customization options..

Morrowind was supposed to be the numero uno game on my list, but I remember how crappy the magic/combat system was. I got pissed off when I smacked a character with my sword, but no damage or even impacted on them-then they took out a shortsword and beat down my ass.

Halo 3 promises to be great.

Halo 2 has given me many fond memories...

Jade Empire is probably the only asia-oriented game I've ever liked.

Who doesn't like Grand Theft Auto III and Vice City?

Resistance: FoM was pretty cool, if you can get past the difficulty level.

*Hopes he doesn't get flamed for this* ...And Warcraft III was pretty good, too, even though the story is nothing more than 50 of the greatest game-stories put in a blender.
