Mind immunity

We went up against a Psionic hound today. Not much of a problem itself, we got our butts handed to us but we got away in the end. Thing is mind immunity to it only worked for its confusion ability. Not the other mind attacks it used. So I don't know if they are supposed to be labled as Kinetic ability or if they are truely Psionic ability. If they are supposed to be Psionic can we make it so immunity to mind spells makes us immune to them?

You'll need to find something stronger to make you immune to their psionic abilities. The Mind Flayers and their pets wouldn't be the greatest threat to the entire multiverse if their powers were thwarted by a single, first level spell.

Agree with Half-brood, there are plenty of higher spells that will give you the relavent immunities

Sorry to be overly redundant, but Protection from Evil is a weak ass spell that illithids and their pets laugh at... (personal experience).

Heh, okay, so something like Clarity or mind blank would do the trick then?

FOIG!

How about let's not bother finding out in game, because you aren't going to find any IG references to the OOC mechanics which is what you lack.

PfE/PfG since the beginning of D&D history is not supposed to protect you from -all- mind effecting spells. It is only supposed to protect you from charming and domination. NWN goes ahead and makes it more powerful, but in doing so opens a -HUGE- exploit. Instant immunity from almost the entire school of enchantment. You'll hear more casters complaining about that than people who complain about the half handful of spawns in efu which get to ignore the exploitation.

Part of the core mechanics description of the spell is this.

First, the subject gains a +2 deflection bonus to AC and a +2 resistance bonus on saves. Both these bonuses apply against attacks made or effects created by evil creatures.

Second, the barrier blocks any attempt to possess the warded creature (by a magic jar attack, for example) or to exercise mental control over the creature (includeing enchantment (charm) effects and enchantment (compulsion) effects that grant the caster ongoing control over the subject, such as dominate person). The protection does not prevent such effects from targeting the protected creature, but it suppresses the effect for the duration of the protection from evil effect. If the protection from evil effect ends before the effect granting mental control does, the wouldbe controller would then be able to mentally command the controlled creature. Likewise, the barrier keeps out a possessing life force but does not expel one if it is in place before the spell is cast. This second effect works regardless of alignment.

Count your lucky stars that it blocks sleep, colorspray and countless other spells which would utterly rock you just as easilly as a warrior with a stash of strong healing potions, PfE/G potions, elemental protections and invis potions can rock a reasonably prepared mage by using artifacts of his own art against him. Mind immunity is a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation.

Most importantly though, think of how great it is that you didn't just walk in and trounce a powerful illithid who offered no threat (or challnge or fun or prestige upon victory). Instead, you got one of the rare moments in EfU where the trick to making the quest as simple as clockwork offered was actually tricky and dare I say exhilirating?

Agreed Ilithids are the most powerful creatures in the underdark for Reals! They wouldnt be the most powerful if some Drow wizard could just say Protection from EVIL! And suddenly the ilithid are helpless tentacle freaks!

Didn't look at it that way, thanks for the enlightenment.

Unless they're neutral illithids. Then you're screwed.

Ya but like .1 of ilithids are neutrel

and .5 of .1 are good!

They eat brains. Brrraaaaiiiiiinnnnnss. Sure, some don't. A good illithid would be as rare as Drizzt duel wielding salmons in a side quest to find the enchanted cantalope of Azjiberin while simultaneously beeing followed by a flock of incredibly sexually active gnomes.

Not to derail the thread, of course.

Been reading the new book?

It's still a FOIG! No warrior from the arse end of nowhere is going to know straight away what spells protect from what kinds of things. That's why you pay wizards to do the research!
