To the Sherrif [DM]

[The following letter is enclosed:]

Seekers Honorable Councilors

I speak on behalf of the Seekers, an organization that until recently was an imperative part of Sanctuary’s defense against both internal and external threats.

I do not mean to raise in this letter the question of the Seekers’ innocence or guilt in regards to the murder of Mayor and First Citizens Demetrius Bhast. It is my belief that all factions in Sanctuary have their history of failures and rogue members. I direct your attention to names such as Sheriff Eugene Walters. The entire Watch was not persecuted and driven out of town due to the actions of their leader and several prominent members.

First of all, the Seekers are not only important as the single most capable scouting faction in Sanctuary, with many years of experience and gathered information, they are also imperative when it comes to locating slavers and freeing slaves from the grasp of the drow, the duergar and the aberrant creatures who surround the settlement as well as those slaving-circles operating within Sanctuary.

Secondly, the Seekers’ raids on various caravans have provided Sanctuary for many years with resources and products such as finer silk, leather, wood and even drink. They have also located possible sources of ore to be mined, something the city is in dire need of as the only capable smith in town is currently working with salvaged goods.

Thirdly, the Seekers were created to find the Way and to guide people to the Surface and out of the Eternal Night. The Seekers are currently working on several possible leads to the Surface, from old trade routes to planar-portal connections. Without the open cooperation and knowledge of the citizens and factions in the city, their work is severely hindered. Their knowledge of the Underdark is also valuable to anybody wishing to learn how to survive while traveling the Underdark.

The city is more divided now then it has ever been before, and it needs the Seekers’ support, knowledge and skills. The Seekers wish nothing more then to be able to resume their dedication and work in the protection of Sanctuary as a whole and its citizens, to set their skills against the dangers that ever lurked, to seek out the Way to the surface and to inspire others to do likewise.

Ardrion Quilwen -Crone.

Sherrif,

The Council is currently debating the return of the Seekers. Obviously, given their history, a new contract will be ironed out in which they receive no law enforcement powers and are also made subordinant in terms of command to the Watch and Council. Any signs of dissent or plotting from them will terminate the contract for a final time and they will be ejected.

Of note is that the Seekers raid frequently, returning many of the valuable resources and goods to the city. Moreover, they return slaves to freedom. If we let them back under a strict new mandate agreeable by both the Watch and Council, these resources can be injected into Sanctuary and their freed slaves found a position in our military or workforce.

Their implication in the assassination of Bhast, to our knowledge, is not supported by any evidence. Suspicion alone is no reason to withold such a strategically important organisation from joining with us once again for the betterment of all.

The reason I write, Sherrif, is that you hold veto power. I did not want to bother deliberating with my Council members for any lengthy period of time only to have this measure rejected by you.

Hopefully we can find some accord. I strongly believe the idea of their return has merit, and I pray to Tempus that you also come to see the wisdom in it.

The Council eagerly awaits your reply.

Councilors,

Any returning Seekers should be required to divulge the location of their missing files, and if those responsible for attacking my men after the assassination are identified they should face judgement for their crimes.

As they would lack a leader, with Portnom's seclusion, the Watch should be in charge of their recruitment and operations. The Seekers have openly opposed law and order in the past; the Watch has always kept the peace. It would be folly to leave them to their own rebellious devices once again.
