Basic Personae inventory (BPi) - Preliminary Information

In correctional and forensic settings, self-report multiscale inventories often contribute to decisions regarding diagnostic formulation, mental health treatment (e.g., evaluation, planning, prognosis, and monitoring), risk assessment, offender classification and management.

Because they often play a central role in custody and managerial decisions, there are ethical, clinical, and legal concerns that respondents’ self-report profiles have some degree of accuracy. Without confidence in the validity of respondents’ responses, the efficacy of test results for decision makers is greatly reduced.

Given the demands placed on clients by institutional or legal contexts, there is particular concern of dissimulation in such settings. Dissimulation may take many forms, including falsification of psychopathology or of shortcomings, defensiveness, impression management, and random, irrelevant, hybrid, or socially desirable responding. These response styles may be attributed to lack of cooperation, insufficient reading ability, acquiescence, and attempts to obtain external incentives or to satisfy internal needs by minimizing, exaggerating, or fabricating psychopathology. Examples of situations in which dissimulation might occur in correctional settings include sentencing hearings, commitment evaluations, prison classifications and screenings.

The motivations to dissimulate arising from these situations might consist of avoiding severe punishment or unwanted duties (e.g., work); obtaining desirable housing, better living conditions, or more privileges; avoiding or escaping harassment or assaultive behavior; or obtaining monetary benefits.

In order to assess individual risk factor in these situations, research is required to further complement bias or truthful, desirable or undesirable behavior.

Convicts, fugitives, race, and normalized answers must be compiled in order to attest the norm and out of norm.
