Bards third circle spell

On my charctor, I have 14 charisma. I am lvl 7, but I have no slots for third circle. Why does it allow me to pick third circle spells ((And not say your statues aren't high enough etc...)) and not give you the one spell for your two kinda thing?

A dm said I must have 16 charisma for the bonus spell at lvl 7, but I think that is screwed. I mean, COME ON! Allow the dwarven bards to have spells here!

Another note, It stinks of a conspiracy that I get to lvl 7 and nothing happens except I get another AB point. Also another second circle spell but thats beside the point.

Normal Bard spell progression.

Cant be changed, you can always find an item that gives you 3rd level slots.

-but bards are plenty powerful enough.

Lets not be showing any love towards dwarves by giving them anything in the way of bonuses regarding arcane spells, kpt. Not any hate but it's a long shot to say that dwarves are known for great wizards or sorcs, let alone bards... You already got your +15 lore, be happy with that.

All casting classes have their associated ability modifier as the maximum spell level that character can cast. For example, clerics must have 14 WIS (+2 modifier) to be able to cast 2nd-level spells. They could be level 20, but if their WIS is only 14 they can only cast up to 2nd-level. INT represents a wizard's intellectual capacity to understand magic, WIS represents a cleric or druid's ability to understand the divine, or nature, and CHA reflects a sorcerer or bard's inherent magical affinity. If enough of that mystical heritage isn't showing through your CHA, you don't have the blood or the personality/drive to pull off better spells.

Even if you got a Bonus Spell Slot for your bard, he wouldn't know any spells of that level. Only Clerics, Druids, Paladins, and Rangers automatically have access to all spells of a spell level they can cast. Other classes have to learn as they progress; wizards need to have the INT and class level to learn spells of a certain level.

Being a dwarf isn't a reason not to have 16CHA as a Bard. Being a halfling isn't a reason not to have 16STR if you're a Fighter or a Barbarian. Not being very mechanically-minded, I know it's frustrating to get to a level with a character and wonder why a certain feat or spell isn't available. But that's where your character is now! We gotta keep on truckin'.

Besides, this is all hardcoded. We can't do anything about it anyways.

That is incorrect. You can cast up to (Int)-10 circle spells.

So a 13 Wis Cleric can cast up to circle 3 spells. This means they need to up that to 14 by level 7 if they want to get those level 4 spells.

If it were by bonus, then a human with 18 int could only ever cast up to circle 6 spells, and would have to get to level 40 to even begin to cast circle 9 spells, even though normal spell progression plainly expects you to be able to cast circle 9 spells at half that spellcasting level.

On another note, I feel ridiculous calling them circle spells... hehe.

That applies to Clerics, Wizards and Sorcerors.

For Bards, they need to bonus for the relevant spellslots. You need 18 CHA to have spellslots if you ever get to level 10 and into the fourth circle.

you need at least another level or 16 cha. It's just how it works.

It's a good thing I already said I'm not mechanically-minded, or I'd feel silly!

I didn't know this, I thought bards progressed according to there ....ahh hell, Screw this. Noirin will live without 3rd circle spells.

Or die.

If you have a look at the following link:

http://www.nwnwiki.org/Bard#Spells_per_Day

You'll see that there's a zero in the 3rd circle when you reach level 7. this means you technically have access to 3rd circle spells, but you have no slots without a +3 or higher cha modifier or an item with bonus slots. Once you reach level 8 however you'll have at least one casting per day.

This thread is a prime example of why I posted this thread a while back.
