Letter to the Beacon

Those of the Beacon,

I hope that some representative of the Beacon is able to attend our meeting. Many things will be discussed that should be of import to your interests.

The cost of 250 coin is to provide security for this event and to eliminate persons who are not serious about Lower and its future.

Hoping to hear from you soon.

Andrei Tribe of the Blade

Andrei,

I would like to attend your event if possible, but I find your letter, to be frank, showing complete ignorance of the plight of Lower.

The people of Lower Sanctuary who most need to have their voices heard in any discussion of its future are the poor, who could not possibly afford the 250 gold you ask, which could feed a small family for months.

Instead of eliminating persons who are not serious about Lower and its future, you are eliminating the vast majority of the people who actually live in Lower from being able to attend. You are eliminating, in effect, the people who are the future of Lower.

I will not be attending, therefore, unless this requirement is reconsidered. Should you wish to honestly hold a forum to discuss the troubles of the common people, perhaps you would do well to allow common people to attend.

Sincerely,

Elias Brock Keeper of the Beacon

Brock of the Beacon,

We host this meeting for Master Gray. This is a gathering of merchants and those wielding power that can affect the lives of the people of Lower. It was not intended to listen to every pathetic wretch that wishes to lament and wallow in sorrow at the path they find themselves on. It seems that is the function of the Beacon, and we would hate to deprive of you such an important responsibility.

It is my understanding that the Beacon has frequently attempted to represent these poor and voiceless folk. Those attending will have a voice in matters that shape the future of Lower. If your institution is so miserly that such a paltry sum prevents you from helping these people, then we suggest you close your doors from the shame that will be lavished upon you for this hypocrisy.

And you will be glad to know that I am not driving this discussion. I was unaware of my ignorance, which you so gracefully have pointed out to me on a faceless sheet of paper. Perhaps in the future, you might make your criticisms directly to my face so that I might decide if my honor has been tarnished and if a duel is required to regain it.

Some of my brothers and sisters have killed others for such insults. I prefer to follow the local customs and give warning first, especially since you had seemed a man of honor in our earlier dealings. Perhaps your insult was unintentional?

The Beacon has been invited to this gathering. If you choose not to attend, then you will have no part in the balance of power and future governance in Lower.

The choice is yours. If no response is made, the invitation will be withdrawn.

Andrei Tribe of the Blade

Andrei,

I hope that your belief that the people of Lower are wretched and wallowing in sorrow is not shared by those of the rest of the Tribe, or of the meeting which is hosted by your Tribe.

The coin of the Beacon will go towards helping the people of Lower, as it always has. Our doors will remain open as long as the possibly can. From your words, as they are all I have to go on, it seems clear that your meeting has nothing to do with the plight of the people of Lower.

I will not be attending, nor will I require your wand-making services in the future. If I have said something that offends your honor, you are welcome to challenge me in whatever way you see fit.

Sincerely,

Elias Brock Keeper of the Beacon
