i know your programers are brilliant at what they do so i think they can probrobly make this work i was thinking since this is the underdark we should have an enemy that is hurt by light or somewhat. mabye gets stats lowered when in a bright enough light or something where they usualy regenerate hp but while inlight they don't. well im not sure how many people will like this idea but i think it would be a great addition
new enemy
I like it.
Perhaps with a special water or wind attack to douse torches and braziers? Or innate ability to cast darkness?
That would be sweet to be tooling about in the Underdark, making your daily trip to Mur and getting attacked by a pack of predators that are attracted to light sources, and shoot a darkness spell just before attacking.
Dispel the darkness, penalties to the predators. Nice companion possibility for druids, rangers, evil summoners.
Darkhounds of the Underdark
no no i meant an enemy that is hurt y darkness or something you could run into them at random or something and the only thing you could hurt them with is a torch or something like the spell light and such but not something that a continul light on an object could hurt and depending on the light brightness would do more damage or less like dim light would do like 1 damage to them a second normal would do 3 damage a second and bright would do 5 damage a second or something like that
By chance, do you supply the voice for Boo of Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends?
Wow. Try to say that whole sentence without stopping.
Torchlight doesn't have enough energy to hurt anything, even if it's used to the dark. Maybe some undead creature crafted from negative energy?
Just thought a pack of Cave Prowlers that cast darkness before striking would be sweet. Hounds of the Baskervilles and all that.
Wouldn't character crap their pants, not knowing if it was a drow assassin, PC getting revenge or these predators? It'd make you use your stockpile of seeing potions, no?
I think it would take the 3rd-level spell "Daylight" to apply light sensitivity penalties to Drow and similar creatures; not all Underdark creatures are sensitive to bright light, and if NWN did have Daylight it wouldn't replicate the damaging properties of actual sunlight. It's something like a -2 AB/universal saves penalty (to sensitive creatures), if I recall. Not terribly useful!
Well, this sounds extremely hard to script.
You'd need to change all Light-related spells. Then you'd have items with Light, which I have no idea how those could be scripted-- don't think it's possible, but if it was, would require some sort of "on heartbeat" script to check if the monster entered inside the "light radius" and that would be bad performance-wise.
I think some interesting monsters could be created using the default abilities without requiring enormous scripting time.
Although, I would enjoy seeing some scripted creatures, like a Rust Monster. :)
You just make it so that the creature moves around with a constant darkness effect over it, and then have it take damage when in the radius of something with a light effect, and then make it immune to all other forms of damage. If it acquires the Light effect itself from, say, a light spell or, god forbid, Continual Flame, it takes a little more damage.
Why not?
and then have it take damage when in the radius of something with a light effect
How do you do that? Script-wise...
It shouldn't be hard to have an creature with 'invisible' appearance and apply the black light radius effect on it on spawn. That'd make some sort of "Pure Shadow" monster.
But the black light work as a light to the engine, applying penalties to hide among other things. That'd make it even harder to check if it's within a light-radius, I suppose.
The Light visual effects project from an affected object as a visual effect (no different than, say, the Epic Mage Armor visual effect which is large enough to encompass other objects but certainly doesn't affect them), so, it doesn't apply itself to objects in its radius (with the exception of Darkness, which is an Area of Effect object itself, and it should be stationary). Magical Darkness blocks out all other forms of light, except for Daylight (which isn't in NWN); the intersection of Darkness and Daylight will be a normal light zone, I think, but that would be almost impossible to represent in NWN due to visual effect limitations (even if custom VFX were added).
An OnSpellCastAt event could check whether or not Flare, Light or Continual Flame was cast on a creature, but this has no effect on magical Darkness effects (visually; custom Spell Resistance checks/saves could be scripted in) nor whether or not the object is entering a bright area. I believe the tile static light functions were deprecated, but I'm not entirely sure, and that would be a pain to check every heartbeat (which is irregular enough as it is). The presence of nearby equipped light sources would need to check every possible Light property from every equipped item, as well.
So, it's possible to make a creature that's weak against specific spells (in this case, Flare, Light and Continual Flame) via custom AI. But not general light sources. Or, if the functions are still around, not without executing a few dozen lines of code every round.
well i sort of got the idea when watching the first riddick movie the otherday and was thinking it would be kinda neat to have in the underdark the monsters there could not take the kind of radiation light gives off or something like that it would hurt them but not kill them unless its very bright or touching them.
Although, I would enjoy seeing some scripted creatures, like a Rust Monster. :)
what are you evil or something thats insane they are not fair they eat everyting even though they should only eat alittle or eat it all but not instantly i mean they hit you and bam! your in the nude running away from them weaponless except mabye for that club you had on you by accident and your randed weapon unless its darts of something. then you end up in town naked and very embaressed unless you happen to have some rags on you or something
Giant Maggots!
Bright Light sensitivity-races such as Drow (and Duergar, if I recall correctly) could perhaps be blinded by the following spells (rather then simple objects such as torches) for 2 rounds or something;
Good spells to blind such races would be fireball and Flare.

You mean like Drow?
Heh, everyone's already said that, but I think it needed a more gruff response. :P
