I really think his acid sheath spell needs removal. The only thing it encourages is people to metagame it and bring a dispell, heavy elemental protections or send in rogues with blur to dodge those fire balls.
Would even be nicer if it was the lower end elemental shield spell. Or reduce the duration. The qeust seems fine up till the end. Perhaps increase the gold reward instead of that to replace the many many potions used in the end area. (no competant priest or otherwise could possibly heal everyone in time before the next fireball FYI)

Asking me to come with my standard set of spells doesn't sound like metagaming. :)
I guess people will have a words against it, but I do enjoy bosses, as hard and as deadly as they may be. It gives you a reason to use you're good stuff, like the scrolls/potions/magic items that you've been saving. I feel don't always have to wait for a dm quest or something to come up to use them, and what's the point of having them otherwise? :) If I recall correctly though, the gold reward -was- a bit low the last time I did it, and while I am a against a negative gain for doing a task, it doesn't always have to turn into a huge profit in the end. Gold could probably be perked a bit.

I disagree. The group I went with...well, we just hacked right through it. Of course there were three barbs up front just charging anything that moved, but it can be done.
I don't even think he cast a fireball.

With our group there was a cleric a paladin, a rogue and two highish level fighters (6 and 7) and we just could'nt touch him without taking 27 damage a round in acid. (thats more than 30% of my hp)

You don't die until you take 100% of damage. :D
Arrows and throwing axes work too!
Edit: I wonder how a wizard counterspelling him would work!
So many options!

Please bare in mind most people dont take all barb groups, who can hand out constant massive closecombat damage to prevent any casting, and take it back. I was on a 50 50 chance to die instantly in alot of that if I wasn't careful. Any accidental or purposeful attacks (remember AOOs suck) on that ogre means death to me in an instant with that spell, pretty much.

Now that's evil. Make the Ogre Boss cast Acid Sheath, and make him run around a bit to get AoO's against him. <_< Sounds like a plan!

I frontlined that whole quest and my bard charged the ogre boss with a great axe. We managed fine. However, I think that transitioning into a fight like that is a bit silly. I think the boss should be in an area that you have a bit more room to manuver.

I applaud the evilness of an evil npc using the spells to his benefit as best that evil npc can. Perhaps some of the existing PC spellcasters might note the benefit of learning to use counterspelling in a face off against an enemy spellcaster, or to carry a more diverse spell repitoire to combat good tactics. The possibilities extend to other spells as well that I have only very rarely seen cast, let alone memorized.
Seeing that a PC spellcaster is usually more intelligent than the rest there are many possibilities to include saving many of the useful first and second circle spells on scrolls. Having been in combat against drow spellsingers (or any other spellcaster) in the past I have and still do hope that this happens, though it still rarely does, that I will see a scroll or memorized dispell magic spring forth to remove the buffs that have made said drow able to take a group of 7-8 all from full health to injured or below, with more than a few of those near death. Or to dispell the damage a well placed sleep, color spray, ghoul touch, hold person, blindness, etc., has done to the frontline.
I think that a wise and or intelligent pick of standard spells goes a long ways, especially in the underdark. I can really only say I have partied with one or two mages/clerics/bards who carry these types of spells and have used them, adn when I do see it used it's usually the difference between living and becoming stew. To those that have used it, a little ranger thanks you.
