I was playing EfU overnight as I do (more often than I should), when an old show that I knew from my Junior/High school days came on. "Saved by the Bell." It never really occurred to me just how messed up the lessons they taught were. I had always considered MTV the root of all ignorant teenage evil, but after seeing that show again after 10 or so years, I wonder.
MTV is easily an awful, evil thing. But I wonder how many equally messed up shows are out there that are screwing up our teens.
I would never blame the problems of our (American) society on the media, but I am curious if anyone else has run into anything similar. By which I mean a show you knew well that later on sort of seemed incredibly evil.
Thoughts?

There are far worse things on TV than MTV; 60 Minutes and commercial news being the prime suspects.

There was a time duing the Nineties when MTV had some good/palatable programming.
Now, it should just change its name to RTV.

Other than Liquid Television, and Beavis and Butthead-- all the other "non-music video" shows on MTV suck.
Pop-Up Video was cool-- but there again-- that show wasn't on MTV, even though the creators tried to sell it to MTV first.
As for all other television programming-- I am watching more and more BBC programs than any of that American trash.
I do have a soft spot for Family Guy, though....
Watch an episode of your favorite American sit com or comedy show-- then watch "Little Britain".

Tell me that ain't funny. ^_^

Also QFT. And on that topic, I recommend Neil Postman's excellent book "Entertaining Ourselves to Death".
In addition - its TV turnoff week this week! April 23-29...

There are so many factors to look at here, but let's start this simple.
Yes, Pup, I agree. MTV in particular is just a terrible company. Their ethics range from sketchy to downright wrong. They epitomize the West Coast elitist. Their highest values (as can be assumed by watching any of their shows) are sex appeal, wit (particularly the kind that is at someone else's expense), and sex appeal. Oh, and good looks/sex appeal, that one too.
Take the show "Undressed" for instance. The entire show was based upon various sexual encounters between teenagers from the ages of 15-21. While my own stance on human sexuality and pre-marital sexual relations is admittedly more severe than your average American, I can only hope that I'm not the only one who realizes how horrific such a show can be, especially on cable channels that are easily accessed by children who haven't matured and learned both the liberal and conservative sides to the debate of proper sexual morality so that they can decide for themselves. Instead, they see the show and come off with the impression that such a carnal way of life was normal, any other way would be wrong, or simply odd at best.
And please, there may be a lot of things to argue about in my post here, but this is just fact. How can I say that? Because I was that kid just seven years ago.
I'm too tired to continue my MTV rant right now, so I'm going to top it off with this. MTV stands for a fancy and shining facade of liberation from the past, including its styles and morales. They seek to "liberate" young minds from what they've been taught, "teaching" the wild ways of a glorified past. What they don't realize is that they are simply indoctrinating their own beliefs into their viewers. A sad irony.
