The gnome and Kobold hate

I've seen gnomes attack Kobolds for no reason, why is that? And please, give me a different reason other than that gnomes hate Kobolds.

That is just the thing, gnomes -do- hate kobolds! And thus it is perfectly fine to attack them for that reason, of course within the PvP guidelines.

Gnomes are evil, evil little creatures and attack kobolds for no reason! Thus: H8

Either that or it may be due to this:

Garl, as god of Luck and Trickery, leads the gnomish pantheon. He is the arch enemy of kobolds and their patron deity Kurtulmak. According to legend, Garl collapsed the cave-system hall of Kurtulmak, while the kobold deity was hosting Asmodeus.

Soo....Kobolds have a reason to hate Garl, not the other way around...

I'm afraid to say that their racial hatred runs pretty deep!

It seems a bit silly to just go into attack straight away when the opportunity for some RP-ed hatred could occur first, then leading into a fight. I would say more often than not its about treating them with cold distrust before attacking outright.

Not -all- gnomes hate kobolds (and goblins) and vice versa, but it's unusual not to. Followers of Baravar Cloakshadow, Gaerdal Ironhand and Garl Glittergold are probably going to be more violent toward them than others.

They don't get Offensive Training vs. Reptilians and Goblinoids as a racial feat for nothing!

Seriously, I thought it was not a reason to simply attack a racial creature just -because it was a kobold!- we would have dwarves attackign half orcs then! They get offensive training against orcs, (Does this apply to half orcs? it ought to if it doesn't)

Almost everyone hates kobolds.

Just like almost everyone hates goblins. And orcs.

And just about any monster race for that matter. The gnomish race though, does have a long history of fending off kobold attacks.

Gnomes hate kobolds cause the kobolds keep stealing their shoes.

Same foot size, you know....

:P

Kobolds are to gnomes as orcs are to elves, as giants are to dwarves, as undead are to kelemvorites, as evil is to trom, etc. It's racial conflict that is part of the D&D/FR mythos that players are chosing to bring to EfU apparently. In other words, it's canon.

Just my take on the subject, as it caught my notice.

It is probably due to their choice of homes. Both in wooded areas, and underground. It may as well as some of the above stated reasons, reach into their choice of abodes. If you already did not like a kobold/gnome, would you appreciate it sharing a burrow/cave/et cetera with you? You'd find it encroaching on your territory, and after so long of fighting over such, you'd probably develop an animosity toward the other race due to some atrocity(real or imagined) that the other has committed in the past.

We see it in the real world, past misdeeds performed by other people, nations, religions..that leave a permanent ink blot on their 'record' in the mind of other people, nations, religions, et cetera that have carried on for decades, if not longer.

Just my take.

As we said in the announcement about playing a kobold and goblin, being a monster is sufficient reason for someone (particularly a gnome!) to kill you. We would like PvPers to make it a memorable or fun death, of course, but if you're a goblin trying to walk around Upper, even the NPCs will try to kill you.

My point is, WHAT MADE THE TWO HATE EACH OTHER?

Edited to remove a maybe insulting remark.

Errr, scroll up. Some serious and some silly reasons were given already. Once a precedent is set, hard to break it.

Thomas_Not_very_wise My point is, WHAT MADE THE TWO HATE EACH OTHER?

Actual reason.

The kobold god tried to rob a gnome god. The gnome god got tied up, held hostage, and still somehow managed to trick the kobold god into taking him inside his lair. Thereupon the gnome god escaped from his bonds, robbed the kobold god blind, and took off with all his good lewt.

The two races have hated each other since.

I don't know how accurate this is, but the idea of Garl being mad at his lazy gnomes and taking it out on kobolds amuses me: Wikipedia link.

yeah that story is straight out of Races of the Dragon, so obviously that's from a Kobold folklore perspective. I'm sure the gnomes have an equally biased viewpoint on how this tale goes!

I would agree whole-heartedly with this view. Sadly, it does seem that some players have been ambushing kobolds & goblin PC's, fugue-deathing them with virtually no RP. :(

Having tried 2 kobolds, I can say on the one hand I've really enjoyed the looming threat of PvP at any moment. And, for the most part, I've enjoyed the PvP (when there has been RP involved). On the other hand, when PvP is simply someone immediately attacking you with little or no warning, it simply turns into another way for you to have a senseless death at a transition, or while AFK a moment, etc., and is not fun at all.

There's nothing wrong with it, in fact, it's exactly what you're signing up for when you decide to play a goblin or kobold. I suggest players not play a monstrous race if they dislike the idea of this happening to them. Incidentally, a large frustration for myself as a DM that has been moderating and overseeing a lot of this PvP lately has been seeing players die, only to make another throw-away goblin or kobold that essentially acts the same as their last PC with a different name above the head. More on that though, in a different thread. Sorry to de-rail this one, but that point needed to be addressed.
