This will anger exploring players, but under good conscience I, Thomas Johnson, regular player of the server EFU, cannot let continue. When exploring the underdark, all you have to do is wait for a reset and Whazza! Ya back home!
What I am suggesting is placing triggers in certain far flung areas ((Like the North Divide or the North Shore Volcan)) in which ya home point is set in a -safe zone- of that area. This will force that charctor to treck all the way back to Sanctuary, and set there home point there again.
I understand any grievance against this, but I think it is far more realisitic that when ya track at least 5 days away from Sanctuary, you should manually take your charctor back.

I quite like this idea, Thomas. It'd reinforce the feeling of danger in the Underdark. Although, I'm not sure how this'd work if you set your spawn at odd places like Sewertown, or more spoilerish areas which shall remain unnamed. Hopefully Arkov could work some magic to sort problems like that out
I've a few grievances with the idea, but am too tired to write any more.

Sounds neat, and might save people some travel grief if they crash on or near a quest a ways away from town. I imagine it being something like regional spawn points, that take priority over preferred spawn points if you're outside your "preferred" region. Possible regions include: Dunwarren, Dark Lake, Underdark, and some other places that I have never been because I almost never leave Upper Sanctuary. >_>

I don't like this. You may log out at a safe wilderness area only to log back in to a troll-infested wilderness area, or spoilery areas, or what have you. Plus, I don't play much recently due to RL, and I don't like the idea of having to spend 5 minutes of what little time I do play simply walking back to town.

This idea is not completely new, but nothing has ever come from it. Completely custom spawn points are possible at the moment, and it would be possible to have someone always log in wherever they logged out. Number one problem (probably) with this has been mentioned: wilderness areas have a high potential to mess you up.
A solution to this leads to a different implementation, which would be like a "last safe spot" system: as you travel around, the most recent area you've been to that is considered safe is recorded, and you will log in there next time you come on. There still -could- be danger/enemy/spawn issues, but under this system they would be very reduced.

I think the monster in spawn point can be solved by adding an ooc area that can only be exited, not re-entered for any reason to the area in which your spawn point was transferred to. The Area is strictly ooc, and no monsters can enter, nor can it be exploited so you can go in it and you are safe. You can only exit it, and cannot re-enter it. This will give an oppurtunity for players to hit stealth or cast invisibility before going out into the underdark. I know this will be a bit of work, but it will add a feeling of danger to the udnerdark.

Thomas has a point, but I don't like it. I personally like logging out in the middle of nowhere. Especially when I die, return, grab my gear, and am already late for class (why do characters always die five minutes before class/work?).

I like this idea. Though I do know a certain island where you could be severely screwed by this. But, as has been suggested, a few tweaks will fix that right up.

Opposed. What if you come in an area you need money to get out of (Blildelildelolpoop, Multalikt -- Whatever, I know I'm not totally up on the names!), and you don't have it? Stuck there forever? What if you crash deep inside Dunwarren and can't get out of it without a party (or you fall asleep at 5 AM and your party leaves without you)... Would you be stuck forever, until a DM decides to give you a port back?
The answer is simple: Vote no against the Illithid Campaign in 151.

I am talking about way out areas, not well traveled ones, if you go to the Northshore *Spoiler* It is one of the least traveled areas therefore people out to be forced to take there charctor back. Places Like Mur and Kua-toa place, you can get back easily since they are well traveled. ((You charctor hikes back to Mur with a group going back))

While helping realisim, in OOC terms I could see how this might become frustrating, such as after a crash when you (but maybe not the rest of your party) returns to some far-fung land, now questless and unequiped to go anywhere for the next 12 hours...
Generally if I go out to the underdark, I try to make a point to return to a safe spawn or town before I log just in good form.

Maybe this could be optional? I mean, this would really help long term dm quests.

At the same time, DMs have to set up the areas again if the server goes up, which takes a while. Might as well just start the trip over. My opinion is that this character-pin-point isn't exactly going to be a helpful tool; besides giving adventurers a harder time. I like ending up in a usually crowded area in Sanctuary, even when I logged out on the surface. It's just comfortable knowing you don't have to worry about getting back.

If the suspension of disbelief helps you understanding that an entire area that you JUST crossed and it was empty is suddenly crowded with the most dangerous beasts you can imagine just because you passed a transition, it should just as easly help understanding that you miraculously are back in town again from wherever.
I don't think either this would really help enhancing game experience all that much.
