Kelvhan Olortynnal, Last Stand Inn

-The "Machine" is the name commonly given to the mechanical workings that lie within and under the upper ruins of Dunwarren. It consists of a great number of mechanical devices, linked and spread out over a great deal of terrain under the upper ruins of Dunwarren. The "Machine" itself was created by the Deep Gnomes of Dunwarren, in conjunction with their once-allied Chosen, to facilitate and enhance numerous aspects of their lives.

In its current state, the "Machine" possesses less than a shadow of its old purpose. The animatrons that stand guard within appear to act on pre-existing orders formed before the fall of Dunwarren. Most are hostile to any outside entities; those few that are not create cryptic messages to those who interact with them. The animatrons once fulfilled the roles of servants and defenders to the Deep Gnomes of Dunwarren; they are now the last remnants of their defensive forces.

The Order of the Spellguard has managed to salvage a number of animatrons from the ruins of the "Machine." I am unfamiliar with the specifics of how they are salvaged, but I believe that, essentially, parts from other animatrons are used to re-create a single animatron, which is then magically animated to obey the commands of the Order of the Spellguard.

The area commonly referred to as the "Bowels" is merely one of the upper levels of the immense "Machine" structure. It provides access to other areas of the Dunwarren ruins, though this access is often blocked. Animatrons remain prominent in this level, but further access will require one to face the threat of the Chosen.

-Zar Carstain was an adventuring explorer who investigated the ruins of Dunwarren some time ago. I know nothing of him that cannot be obtained from the persual of his text on his explorations.

-While Deep Gnome settlements exist throughout the Night Below, Dunwarren is alone in its level of mechanical complexity and level of advancement. If other such settlements exist, then they are beyond the sight of nearly all.
