Someone mentioned to me that there was a way to block "tells" (those that don't come from DM channel), and that they thought it also allows and "auto-response" indicating tells were being ignored.
If this is so, does someone have instructions on how to do it?

If you right click on the text box, a list comes up of commands to block out various things, Tells being one of them.
Not sure if it automatically sends the response though.

<Snoteye> You can disable tells, JoS.
<Snoteye> But Arkov needs to add the documentation. >.>
<Nickless> How can you do that Snoteye?
<Snoteye> I don't remember the command.
<Arkov> Snoteye is correct on both counts.
<Arkov> Well, first I need to ensure that it's working.
<Arkov> It wasn't 100% last time I checked.

I don't think you
block anything, you just exclude it. If that's correct, it likely bypasses the script that sends the notice back as well.

There's something in the nwn.ini client side isn't there? I've never bothered to look and don't have it to hand now so someone else could enlighten us 'ere.

Out of curiosity, why would anyone want to block tells?

I was wondering the same thing. If someone's annoying you with lots of tells, you may be better off talking to them about needing some space or, if that doesn't work, speaking with a DM.
Or it could be something else entirely, in which case I'll stfu.

I can think of several reasons. First, tells for some people break immersion. Having them blocked would make the game more enjoyable for them. Second, and perhaps the only reason I'd use such a thing - is when something major is happening around your character. You get a ton of tells with people asking what is going on - this occasionally causes problems.
I could also see it being useful to DM's who would prefer players to use the DM channel instead of sending tells.

Strictly an immersion thing.
Everybody is different when it comes to using "tells". Some folk like chatting, others don't.
It would be nice if there was an automatic "this player is not currently receiving tells" response that would play when you don't want to be interrupted by them.
In retrospect, however, it may make matters worse, as private tells might start spilling over into the gaming screen as "// hey, fred, you're not getting "tells", and I wanted to ask you something...".

Please excuse my fellow DMs! There seems to be a lot of confusion about this, which is unfortunate, but hopefully this will be a good chance to clear it up before I post the actual documentation for this system.
A while ago, several players were voicing their concerns that, while they did not object to occasional tells from other players, getting flooded with tells during various events was breaking immersion for them and generally getting tiresome. At the same time, though, there are issues with just using the text box's feature to ignore tells: mainly, important tells from DMs (such as "You notice <insert vital clue here>.") might be lost.
I've been in the process of testing out a voice-command-based ("/c tell_filter ...") system to let you control which tells you want to block. For example, you can block tells from one specific player, or block tells from everybody on the server, or block tells from everybody on the server except for a list of people. Tells from DMs will always go through. To avoid any confusion, both parties will get a little message along the lines of "[Tell to ... ignored]"/"[Tell from ... ignored]". This system should allow players to control what sort of tells they want to receive without having to talk with everybody on a case-by-case basis to explain your preferences.
This system is purely for the convenience of players who find tells to be, at times, immersion breaking.
The initial system actually went in several weeks ago, but due to final exams and final projects, I haven't been able to do the last round of testing until now. Hopefully that should be completed shortly, and once that is done documentation for the system will be posted on the Information for New Players forum (and it will be mentioned in the Announcements forum as well).
So, JackOfSwords, please just be patient, and documentation should be up within the week.

As always, I hope that our players will exercise common sense and this will not be an issue.

Although I can understand that tells may hurt some people's immersive experience. I can't help but find the prospect of letting people block all tells somewhat rude and a tad selfish in if someone really does need to tell someone something OOC (and no you don't know that every tell will be nonsencial) they have to break the immersion of eveyone surrounding them.
I can see that this command would be a necessity in some aspects but maybe have it reset to unblock at log on.
As for blocking tells from individuals, if someone won't leave you alone after repeatedly asking you not to talk to them then it is an issue for the DMs.
Just my 2 cents either.

Cool. It would be nice to try it out. Not certain whether it will prove beneficial or problematic, but would definitely like to try it. 8)
