Is it ICly okay to expect person (who is known to be a wizard/druid/sorcerer) to have a companion or familiar?
Are companionless people considered oddity or rarity either among other wizards/druids, or among commoners/other people?

In pencil and paper, you only have a familiar if you cast a specific, expensive ritual to find one. Someone who either does not make use of their familiar or does not seem to have one would not be that strange, since they could have:
A) Not summoned one.
B) Lost theirs to death.
C) Had a big argument and started seeing other magical creatures.
or any of a variety of other reasons.
Note as well that a druid and ranger's animal companion is not a summon (even though the NWN1 treats it this way with the click and appear button). These animal companions can and should not be "summoned" into environments where they could not get into normally. (IE the city, because a guard would see them / people would run in fear.)
You can pretend your animal companions are like Epona from The Legend of Zelda: OoT
That game was -sweet-.
Epona is such a sexy name
