The following speech was given by Earas of the Seeker organization within both the Town Hall and the Beacon.
People of Sanctuary, you stand at the demarcation line that lies between good and evil, fortune and misfortune, boon and disaster.
Tumult and chaos have enveloped Sanctuary-its dusty, darkened streets, its neglected buildings-but most of all, in the hearts of its people.
You find yourselves split between conflicting desires and points of view. You find your weapons lifted against each other, in insurrection and in bloodshed, over separate ideals.
You find that the crimson tide of blood gushes through your streets, answering the Reaver's call; you find that the best among both sides and ideals fall victim to the depradations of this conflict.
Within the Upper Ward, Yorrick Bresley, Barrister Fawkes, and numerous Watchmen and adventurers loyal to Sanctuary have fallen.
Within the Lower Ward, William Danielson, the engimatic warrior known as "Tooth," and countless other adventurers loyal to the concept of Sanctuary have fallen.
Both forces fought for Sanctuary-one for the entity that now exists, the other for the concept of a free, all-inclusive refuge that once existed, but whose existence has been doubted by many for years.
Now, warriors from both sides have stood as heroes, and died as heroes. I call them heroes because both fought for a true, proper cause-one that should be important to all of you. I call them heroes because they did not waver in their duties, and gave their lives fearlessly, and selflessly, for the entities and ideals to which they were devoted.
As the blood seeps from your wounds and your minds recoil at the horrors that you have seen, a fragile peace envelops you. You now face a choice-allow the bloodshed to continue, and perpetuate the struggles that have continued among you for over half a century.
You may choose to ignore the history of Sanctuary, and the lessons that it offers you. You may choose to ignore the knowledge that a compromise must come, and that neither the ideal of Sanctuary, nor the entity of the settlement itself, will fall to these internal struggles.
You may also choose to ignore the knowledge that Sanctuary has never been weaker, nor has it been in a more compromised position in regards to its enemies. You may choose to ignore the repeated assaults and invasions that Sanctuary has endured over the recent months-the near-total breaches of its secrecy and security, and the ill-prepared state it finds itself in to defend from the threats of the Night Below.
If you do this, if you choose to continue fighting amongst yourselves for the separate ideals you hold of this solitary refuge amidst forsaken darkness, if you refuse to allow both the ideals and the modern entity of Sanctuary to co-exist as they should, then I pray that your gods will have mercy upon you.
As I state this, I offer one final plea to you. No doubt many of you know that Ivlysar Tal'en'quir, one of the original founders of Sanctuary, alongside the historic Bresleys, Ubels, and Archibalds, lies slain this moon. He, alone and apart from few others, has watched over this settlement for a century and a half.
Ivlysar bore witness to the rise of Sanctuary. He bore witness to its darkest hours, and the greatest triumphs of its people. Through all of these, he mantained his solitary vigil as the leader of the Seekers-ever encouraging a city that increasingly pushed aside the message of his organization, ever guarding against threats from a city that invariably attempted to marginalize the efforts of his forces.
Ivlysar possessed a knowledge that many of you are unwilling to embrace. He knew that, no matter the outcome of the petty struggles that occur for this barren refuge amidst the nightmare realm that is the Night Eternal, the ultimate salvation of the people of Sanctuary would not come in the triumph of ideal or law-but through the escape upward to the moon-kissed realms of the surface.
It is true that Ivlysar struggled to attempt to bring peace among the myriad of conflicting emotional desires and interests that Sanctuary spawned. It is true that his demeanor, and his solemn vigil, may be interpreted by many as aloof and uncaring. Yet Ivlysar's goals always lay in attempting to provide for all of Sanctuary-both the idealists and the unwavering supporters, both rebels and law enforcers-so that they might all share in the liberation that the Seekers have attempted to provide for countless years.
Now, Ivlysar Tal'en'quir lies slain. For a century and a half, he struggled to bring Sanctuary and all of its people to the fulfillment of the promised surface. Now, he passes beyond the veil with that promise unfulfilled. For a century and a half, he struggled to defend and sustain the goodly people of Sanctuary, as best he was able.
Now, his service to you is at an end. Now, he may no longer aid you. Yet he has given you a gift-for a century and a half, he has kept alive the promise of the surface, and the knowledge that all of you may one day partake of that promised fruit.
You may choose to ignore this gift, and allow internal strife and division to push you beyond the demarcation line into disaster. Sanctuary will likely survive this loss-in one form or another. You may choose to eschew compromise, and instead enforce the iron grip of the law that so many feared Barrister Fawkes would bring to Sanctuary.
Yet if you choose this path, Ivlysar Tal'en'quir will no longer be present to remind you of the true path that awaits, beyond the resolution of the struggle and chaos that will ensue. The Seekers may-but our sight, and our knowledge of Sanctuary, will never be as powerful as the memories-the good, the malevolent, the joyous, the sorrowful-that Ivlysar carried within his heart.
The loss of so many, in so short a time, who have led Sanctuary through trials and tribulations no doubt weighs heavily upon you. Yet I tell you now, the loss of Ivlysar Tal'en'quir is the greatest among them. Do not let the century and a half that he spent attempting to aid you, and save you, be in vein. Hear his message, and know that it remains as true as when he first uttered.
The Seekers will fight on in the name of Ivlysar Tal'en'quir, and in the name of the Bresleys, whom Ivlysar pledged himself to aid, a hundred and fifty years ago. We will never abandon our search for a path upward, and we will never surrender to the forces who attempt to destroy this refuge, and all the ideals and history that it has created, over the hundred and fifty years with which Ivlysar Tal'en'quir was with us.
We will fight on, but it is all of you, the people of Sanctuary, who must carry the memory and the message of Ivlysar Tal'en'quir, the Bresleys, and all others who have fought for freedom, in your minds. It is you who must take this message to heart. In your hearts, alone of perhaps few other places in the Night Below, freedom continues to burn brightly. Do not let this light fade.
