Drake's Gambling Games (How to Play)

My character Delorin Drake enjoys gambling and testing the luck of others. To bring more enjoyment to our little world you may find Drake within the Last Stand offering to play dice games. I have created several games that he plays, and this post contains the rules for those games.

Tymora's Luck This is a game made for two players, one is the player and the other is the banker. The player takes on the role of Tymora and the banker takes on the role of Beshaba. The game is played by rolling two six sided dice. Rolling the dice is affectionately called "taunting Beshaba."

The rules are simple. It begins with the player declaring the bet she wishes to make and then selecting a number. The number can be any number between 2 and 12, but it cannot be 2, 12 or 7. Rolling a 2, 12 or the number chosen is an automatic win for the player, but rolling a seven is an automatic win for the banker. The player is given one chance to roll 2d6 in the hopes of winning the bet. Therefore, there are three ways for Tymora to win the bet.

Double or Nothing The loser of the bet (be it the player or the banker) may then declare that they want to try to roll double or nothing. If the other accepts then the wager that was made previously is doubled, and the game is played again.

Showing Mercy Showing mercy is performed by the winner of the bet. She bets a portion of, or even all of the other players debt in an effort to either reduce or erase his debt. She then selects a number and rolls the dice. If she loses his roll the debt is erased by the amount that was bet, but conversely debt is increased if the roll was won.

Beshaba's Challenge This game is played with two six sided dice with at least two players. One player takes on role of Tymora and the other takes on the role as Beshaba, who is also the banker for the game. All bets are placed with the banker, and the job of the banker is to keep track of the game, collect the coin, give out winnings, and keep the flow of the game going.

The number of people who can play Beshaba's Challenge is only limited by the number of people that the banker can keep track of at one time. There is only one type of bet required to play the game: The Challenge Bet. This bet is placed before any dice are rolled.

First, Beshaba sets the maximum bet amount. No bet placed may exceed the maximum bet. Second, a player to take on the role of Tymora is selected who then chooses a number between 2 and 12, not including 2, 12 or 7. If Tymora rolls a 2, 12 or the number she selected or if Beshaba rolls a 2 or 12 she wins the game. If she rolls a seven or if Beshaba rolls her number she loses.

------------------------- Quick Reference

How they win: Tymora wins by rolling a 2, 12 or the number she selected. Beshaba wins by rolling the number Tymora selected.

How they lose: Tymora loses if she rolls a seven or if Beshaba rolls the number she selected. Beshaba loses if she rolls a 2 or 12. -------------------------

Throughout the course of the game various bets can be waged with Beshaba to test the players luck. Below are all the bets that can be placed in the game. All players, including the player for Tymora, can place bets. Only Beshaba (the Banker) cannot place bets.

Challenge Bet This bet is placed before the dice are rolled. It must match Beshaba's maximum bid amount. In a standard game the maximum bid amount is 25 gold. In a moderate stakes game the maximum bid is 50, and in a high stakes game it is 75 to 100 gold.

To place a challenge bet the player attempts to determine who will win the game of dice, either Beshaba or Tymora. Unlike the other bets the bets are pooled together for each opposing team, and the gold from the losers divided among the winners.

An Example: If four people bet 25 gold on Beshaba and two people vote 25 gold on Tymora the money is divided into two pools. Beshaba's pool is 100 gold and Tymora's Pool is 50 gold. If Beshaba wins the game those who sided with Tymora lose their challenge bet and it is divided among those who sided with Beshaba. If Tymora wins the game those who sided with Beshaba lose their bet and the gold is divided among those who sided with Tymora.

To place a challenge bet the player says, "<Gold Amount> on <Tymora/Beshaba>!"

Tymora's Favor This bet offers the best odds for the player but holds the least flexibility. For this bet the player calls for Tymora's Favor on one of the following number pairs: 3/11, 4/10, 5/9, and 6/8. The bet is that Tymora will roll the number the player selects from the pair before Beshaba rolls the opposing number from the pair.

An Example: The player calls this bet and says that he wishes to place his gold on the number 4, if Beshaba rolls a 10 before Tymora rolls a 4 the player loses. However if Tymora rolls a 4 before Beshaba rolls a 10 the player wins. The player also wins if Tymora wins the game before either number is rolled, but the converse is also true in that the player loses if Beshaba wins before either number from the pair is rolled.

A player may place his bet on any or all of the pairs at any given time, but may not place a bet on the same pair until after one of the numbers are rolled. This bet can be placed at any time during the course of the game, and the amount bet is always equal to the Challenge Bet. Therefore if the Challenge Bet is 25 gold every bet for Tymora's Favor is also 25 gold.

To place a bet for Tymora's Favor the player says, "Tymora's Favor on <Number from the Pair>!"

Taunting Beshaba This bet may be placed at any time and it works similar to Tymora's Favor, but the bet has more flexibility and the odds are slightly in Beshaba's Favor. (Hence why you should never taunt the Maid of Misfortune.) The player selects the lowest number from the following pairs: 3/9, 4/8 or 5/7.

An Example: If the player tries to Taunt Beshaba by calling a 3 the player wins if Tymora rolls a 3 before Beshaba rolls a 9, or if Tymora wins the game before either number is rolled. The player loses the game if Beshaba rolls a 9 before the three is rolled, or if she wins the game before either number from the pair is rolled.

A player may place his bet on any or all of the pairs at any given time, but may not place a bet on the same pair until after one of the numbers are rolled. This bet can be placed at any time during the course of the game, and the amount for the bet may be any amount as long as it is not over the Maximum Bid.

To make a Taunting Beshaba bet the player says, "Taunting Beshaba on < 3, 4, or 5> for <Gold Amount>!"

Tymora's Luck This bet may be placed at any time during the game. This is a single dice roll and must be called before Tymora rolls the dice. This works exactly like Tymora's Luck above, with the exception no mercy roll is given. The player may attempt to double his bet on a single number until the game ends. The player wins if Tymora rolls 2, 12 or the number he calls. He loses if Tymora rolls any other number. The bet placed cannot exceed the maximum starting bet.

An Example: A player calls for Tymora's Luck on 3 for 10 gold and the next time Tymora rolls the dice if she rolls a 3, 2 or 12 he wins. If she rolls anything else he loses. If the game is still going on he may double his bet to 20 gold. The next time Tymora rolls the dice and does not roll a 3, 2 or 12 he loses, and he may continue doubling - the next bet at 40 gold, 80 gold after that etc. Until the game ends.

To make a bet for Tymora's Luck the player says, "Tymora's Luck on <Valid Number> for <Gold Amount>!"

Break Even This is a special type of bet that may only be played once per game to erase or double the players debt. It may be made at any time during the course of the game, and if Tymora rolls a 2, 3, 11 or 12 the players debt is erased. If Tymora does not the debt is doubled. If the player has no debt then he does not receive any benefit from the bet either by winning or losing. This bet does not influence the challenge bet, and may only influence the side bets made during the game.

To make a Break Even bet the player simply says, "Break Even!"

Tymora's Blessing This is a special type of bet that may only be placed once per game. The player bets that Tymora will win by rolling a 2 or 12 during the course of the game. If Tymora wins by rolling one of those numbers his debt is erased or his winnings double. If he loses the bet and has debt it is doubled. Tymora's Blessing may not be used in conjunction with the Break Even bet.

To make bet for Tymora's Blessing the player simply says, "Tymora's Blessing!"

Beshaba's Curse This is a special type of bet that may only be placed once per game. The player bets that Tymora will lose by rolling a 7 on her next roll. Unlike Tymora's Blessing this is a single dice roll, meaning that if Tymora does not roll a 7 on her next roll the player loses the bet. If Tymora rolls a 7 the player's debt is erased or his winnings doubled. If Tymora does not roll a 7 on her next roll the player loses and his winnings are lost or if he had debt it is doubled.

To make a bet for Beshaba's Curse the player simply says, "Beshaba's Curse!"

I will be working on other games that can be played to win gold, some dice games and some non-dice games. I'll post about them in this thread. (I may also be tweaking some game rules to balance out any rule problems and to make them more entertaining / addictive to play.)

Why don't you just set up a craps table?

Yes! I whole heartedly support a craps table. However most people don't know the relatively simple rules to craps, and people who do and get a lucky streak could bend the economics of sanctuary.

Seriously if i had 750 gold im willing to blow on craps i could turn that into several thousand in about 20 minutes.

However, pvp craps im all for. Yo Yo Yo Seven-Eleven winner winner!

:P

Heh, well I removed Beshaba's Curse and replaced it with Beshaba's Challenge. It is a more involved game that has a craps like feel. I wanted to create games that seemed like it would fit into the setting and that are fun to play.

Beshaba's Challenge is an interesting game with various layers of strategy. You have to know when to bet, when not to bet, what types of bets to place, and if you're playing Tymora you have to strategize what number to try and hit. It's simple on the surface with a few layers of complexity underneath.

sounds fun, I love to gamble

I wonder if you actually calculated the win probabilities for these games. You might turn out with a loss (even though you probably won't).
