Letter to Councilors (DM/PC)

*a letter is delivered to the Councilors at the town hall*

Councilors,

I am a long time Sanctuary citizen and was a committed member of Sanctuary’s Watch. However, I currently write this letter to relay my concern for the current condition of the Watch, as well as the current Sheriff. I have seen first hand how laws can be manipulated by those within Law Enforcement, especially by the Sheriff. When Barrister Fawkes was but a private, he relayed to me that it was in my best interest to distance myself from another Private by the name of Salina Marshall for she was being internally investigated by him. As such, it was in my best interest to isolate myself from her. She was later demoted to private as a result of his internal investigation. As a result, I received increased scrutiny by the Sheriff in every investigative activity I conducted.

During the time of the Lizardfolk invasion and freshly destroyed Rock Bottom Inn, I responded to a potential sighting of a Drow within Sanctuary. I spotted a helmed elven female speaking to Mr. Worn. I asked her to de-helm so that the complaint could be put to rest. She responded by removing her helm revealing her Drow heritage, while subsequently initiating a massive globe of darkness. She escaped, and I observed Worn running off in the distance. I searched for her, however to no avail. I later found Worn standing next to Sheriff Fawkes. Understanding the dire security situation, I placed Worn under arrest and questioned him at the Watch House. Worn provided an alibi and was subsequently released. Sheriff Fawkes, who was always looking for a way to tarnish my record, disciplined me for abusing authority. He annotated my file with the derogatory information and then reassigned me to the dark and damp file room. Mr. Worn later was arrested for attacking myself and another guard to assist in the escape of an convicted Seeker.

I was disciplined again after placing a citizen by the name of Maelstrala under arrest for endangering Sanctuary by being in possession of an illithid device that nearly killed a number of us citizens traveling with her in the mines. This device summoned large walking brain like dog creatures that attacked us with a magic I have never experienced before. Although she stated she had taken the device from a dead body of an Alphoon, she claimed that she had no idea the object would cause harm. Although I arrested her for being in possession of the item in and outside of Sanctuary, a member of the officer corp., ordered me to subsequently release her and only charge her with serious crimes, rather then capital, because the creatures did not actually attack Sanctuary. I was again disciplined for conducting a “false arrest” that was not in the interests of the standards of the Watch. The many who traveled with me within that mine, to include a Constable, expressed their displeasure of the decision. The Constable was ordered to turn in her CDL armor and that she was a disgrace. After her failing to do so, I was instructed by the same officer to place her under arrest. I seen then and there that the Sheriff’s influence was wide spread and my career was over. In complete frustration at the unlawful order, I quit the watch. A decision I later come to regret.

Later, I approached the Sheriff and informed him that I made that decision based upon significant stress, and asked him to not consider my resignation request. The Sheriff however refused and stated that I have already submitted it and as such it would be honored. He often relayed that he realized long ago that their was no need for the Civil Defense League, nor for individuals such as myself who refuse to conform to his advice. I was then dismissed.

I now bring my situation to each of you. I was a decorated Constable of the Civil Defense League, as well as a committed man to his duties of the Watch. Is there no legislation to over turn such a decision of the Sheriff? Is there no check and balance for an for a Sheriff who uses subjective internal investigations to force out Watchmen he doesn’t like or deems not suitable? I am a old man, with over 30+ years of service to Port Llast and Sanctuary as a Watchman. Before I had service to Sanctuary that kept me going…Now, I have nothing. Is their any justice for a old guard who wishes his position back?
