Letter to Private Longbrook

*left at the watch house*

Private

I have seen your poster concerning the recent Undead assault, and I ask you to let the matter drop. Do you feel the need to constantly remind us all about it, drawing blood from the old wounds again? Fen and I took the blame for that event. Also, Clover was arrested, which led to the 20,000 gold repayment. Do you really need to dig up those old wounds?

We are striving to get the requested sum, due to our perhaps mistook search for the slaves. In that search, we stumbled across drow, which not surprisingly attacked us. And it was here the priestess was slain, shortly before our own group was beaten down and sent back to Sanctuary.

We quickly alerted Sanctuary about the coming danger, and we stood beside you on the walls protecting Sanctuary. Do you think we have not felt the pain caused by our actions? To know what we did cost lives that terrible dark. I offered my aid as a sentry immediately after returning, and did not leave my post until after the assault. Fen was one of those who fell, protecting Sanctuary at the presumed cost of his own life. If I remember correctly, you were the Private I stood guard over, so no thieves could take what was yours. Do not think us some foolish citizens poking at the drow to test their reactions. We did what our hearts told us, to brave the dangers of the Underdark to help those escaped from whoever had held them captive. Would you not do the same, Private Longbrook? Would you not help your kin and fellows, place your life in danger to save those you wish to protect? I believe you do, as you showed when the Undead attacked our gates.

The tragedy that befell us, I still feel. It is due to that, I help Clover get those twenty thousand gold to the Watch families who lost their beloved. I willingly put myself at the trial, of which I was almost sure I was to be stoned. But I believe what the Councilor judged was the right, that we were to be spared. I am not saying, that any of us should deserve a medal. Why should we? By continuing to live, we have a chance to repay for what we did. Or is it truly that you wish us to be stoned, to further weaken Sanctuary? True, what matters the cost of a few lives. But if that is the judgement you wish to fall to all those who would help escaped slaves, to stone all for trying to help, I believe you will soon face a empty settlement.

We did not go out there to anger the drow. We were out there to help those in need. We failed, the drow attacked, lives were lost and the few of us who stood trial did so for our mistakes. Still alive, we can continue to aid Sanctuary. I have already pledged myself to aid in the gold gathering, and have also expressed a wish to serve Sanctuary. Do not open the wounds again, we are feeling them just as well as you do. Perhaps even more, for it was by our actions those fell.

We all share your pain, I kindly ask you to not dig further into them.

I will not rest until Matterheim's verdict is overruled by Council Tribunal. The verdict sets an incredibly dangerous precedent, and only encourages more fools to go knocking at Traensyr's door. Such actions do nothing but cause the needless deaths of our hard working Watchmen, and I'll not stand for it.

Signed,

-Pvt. Hector J. Longbrook.
