Letter to Private Rollek - from Pissing Crone

*Written in an unsteady hand, with several things crossed out and re-written*

Private Rollek,

This is Erik of Waterdeep, and I would like to ask if I am still being considered as a recruit to the Watch. I had an interview with you, {something is crossed out here} and hoped I'd hear back soon..

Also, I was arrested by a private who would not give his name. He claimed I assaulted a gnome, called it a serious crime, and threw me in jail for most of the afternoon. This was during the thing with Bill Winston in Lower. The private never came back, and never gave me the chance to explain my side of things. Eventually the guard let me out after the entire afternoon. I will say I wasn't happy about that whole deal.

The incident this Private was talking about involved a man name Hagen {something crossed out} Raines. This fellow Raines was a bit dim-witted, and was confused when a Councilor was telling him to ignore the Private, and this Private shoots him about two seconds after he tells him to stop. Piss poor procedure I'd say, and I'm sure your dad would say the same.

By the way, I do recall your dad because he drank off-duty with my adopted dad once in a while. Old Gos they called my dad, not sure if you ever heard tell of him. Both were good men, and I'm sure they never shot citizens in the back like an {something crossed out} elf.

This private then walks over to and attempts to physically subdue this obviously powerful tribesman, and got his ass handed to him. I was shocked at this Private's {crossed out} procedure when he shot the man in the back, and even more so to see his foolishness in attacking this hulking brute. I figured he must be tougher than hell to try it, and couldn't believe how easily he got the snot knocked out of him.

The Councilor then stepped in and broke it up, and actually dueled the tribesman, getting his ass whipped as easily as the Private had. So this Private comes into the Arena, tells the bloke he's under arrest, and the Councilor is yelling no he isn't.

It then got confusing as the Private and Raines start fighting again, not sure who started it. All I saw was a {word crossed out} wild-eyed gnome enter the Arena, and fire a rainbow spell at all three of them, the Private, the Councilor and Raines.

I'll tell you what, this Private never asked for help once, and I thought this gnome wizard was using the chaos to attack one of these guys in the Arena, and maybe off them. So my guardsman training kicked in and I rushed over to the gnome and smacked him upside the head to stop his crazy casting. Sergeant of the Watch in Waterdeep always said a mage can't zap anyone if he's getting bopped in the noggin, and sure enough the gnome stopped flinging spells around.

Only hit him a couple times, and I pulled my punches so I wouldn't {word crossed out} hurt him. Didn't even knock him out, and let him be after I had protected the Councilor. So I keep an eye on this gnome, waiting for things to get sorted out, and that was all there was to it.

I have a lot of respect for the law, and heard a lot of good things about Sheriff Fawkes as well. I'd like to join the Watch, but if this incident with this other Private keeps me out, then it's a damn shame because you sure need the help.

Trained as a pit fighter in Traensyr, and I haven't lost a straight duel yet. Beat that Raines' ass that same day he embarrassed that private. Figure you could use someone that can handle a sword, and I'd hate to let my training go to waste.

I'll work in Lower if you need the help and that private isn't man enough to work with me after this.

Regards, Erik of Waterdeep

Erik,

Your file was started and is still being reviewed. It seems that you have made a rather bad impression on a few of my fellow Watchmen. My suggestion to you would be to talk to Sheriff Fawkes as soon as possible so you can clear up a few things with him. In regards to the situation with Hagen I suggest you choose your words carefully. The Private that tried to arrest him is a dear friend of mine, one I owe my life to many times over. Hagen was a valiant warrior make no mistake about it, as I nearly lost my life in the battle that cost him his. The Private did as he thought best, do not be so quick to judge those who you may one day work along side. Perhaps we need to meet soon so that I can have a clearer picture of you, not only your fighting skill, but how your wits serve you in a time of trouble. As it stands, you have an uphill battle to gain the favor of a few of the Watchmen.

-Private Klenson

Private Rollek,

I thought our interview went well, didn't it? Just this dark I did a job for Councilor Tyrell and worked with Private Haren Dovetail, and he said he'd put in a good word for me as well.

A tenday ago I checked on some magic book with Agent Anciano, and he said he was impressed with my wits and swordwork, and mentioned he'd write a letter saying so.

I've got nothing against this private your friend, but I haven't met any other Watchmen. So the others you mention don't know me, unless that fella went and poisoned their minds on me before they even could judge me themselves.

I'll apologize to that private for letting him get his ass whipped, but I tell ya I never saw a guard act so tough and go down that fast. We always worked in pairs in Waterdeep, and if you walk up to an massive tribesman with a sword drawn, you better know how to use it is what we were drilled.

Just ask that I be judge fair. You ask that private and the big one they call Longbrook, I admitted freely that I smacked that crazy gnome, and surrendered peacefully.

Least that guy got Longbrook when he confronted me, so it's good to see he's wizing up. Not that I would have whupped him of course.

To the safety of Sanctuary,

Erik Plainswalker -former of Waterdeep.

Erik,

Don't misunderstand me. Our interview did go well and I thought highly of you but I try not to give recommendations on a one time meeting. The point of my reply was to let you know that you have some work ahead of you. The things you did with the councilor and the agent are well and good but you will have to gain the favor of the Watchmen in order to gain entrance. Again, take my advice and seek out other Watchmen and catch up with me as often as you can so that I might refute those things being said about you to the negative, with first hand knowledge of your abilities.
