letters to the Seekers, Watch, Spellguard and Council

*Seperate letters arrive at each organization, penned in a simple but neat script*

I would report the freeing of the slave Osmurk of the Rusty Beard, just three darks past. He was held by foul Derro far from Sanctuary, south of the Badlands. He is a smith of high regard, and currently is mining in the Stoutheart Mines.

Mastersmith Osumurk has informed us that the mines are nearly depleted of ore. This confirms what we suspected was the ultimate motivation of the Duergar Grunstuhbles to abandon us.

The Stoutheart Clan is interested in resuming the crucial role of providing ore and metals to Sanctuary, but we are currently unaware of any iron-bearing veins of any significance capable of sustaining an industry of the size necessary for the needs of Sanctuary.

We did learn that the gnome Gelleron Cisophne has contacts with deep gnomes that own and operate an unknown mine, and that he is selling the building formerly known as the Blue Mushroom. It appears that both the Duergar and the Svirfneblin are abandoning the good citizens of Sanctuary in such a dangerous time, while the good dwarves of the Stoutheart Clan are actively working to help ensure its safety.

If there is any information concerning a viable source of ore, the Stoutheart Clan would like to dedicate our efforts to the mining and processing of this resource so crucial to the safety of Sanctuary.

We eagerly await word of such an ore-bearing location, and are prepared to begin operations when it is received.

The Stoutheart Clan Council of Elders Thane Rollo Stoneshield

We did learn that the gnome Gelleron Cisophne has contacts with deep gnomes that own and operate an unknown mine, and that he is selling the building formerly known as the Blue Mushroom. It appears that both the Duergar and the Svirfneblin are abandoning the good citizens of Sanctuary in such a dangerous time, while the good dwarves of the Stoutheart Clan is actively working to help ensure its safety.

The above we learn is very likely not true. Gelleron appears to be little more than a parasite, I would not trust nor negotiate with him in good faith.

There is an abandoned mine in the Dunwarren ruins, I am certain you are familiar with it. I'd like to go with you to collect an ore sample, as I have studied a few books on mining recently and expect some things were over looked when this area was last examined.

Lieutenant Fawkes

*a letter arrives at the Watch House addressed to Lt. Fawkes *

Lieutenant Fawkes,

For many reasons, the Stoutheart Clan would be quite interested in examining whether this mine might feasibly yield ore suitable for metalworking.

We will explore this possibility, and inform you and the Council of our findings when we discover something to report.

Inexplicably, the Council has not deigned to respond to our willingness to provide this badly needed resource. Perhaps they have plans to trade with the departed svirfneblin for the ore and metal stock needed for Sanctuary's economy. As a high-ranking member of this town's defensive forces, I would think it might concern you to consider the possibility that the production of arms and armor might come to a screeching halt with the exodus of the Grunstuhbles.

If you have some reason to feel secure that Sanctuary is in no immediate or long-term threat from being deprived of metal ores and the items produced by such, we'd appreciate the information and will cease with our efforts to ensure that Sanctuary is not weakened by this seeming crisis.

We also would like to request permission to mount a strong force of Stouthearts to journey to the depths of below Barak-Tor and eliminate the threat to the safety of Sanctuary.

It also seems that it may be necessary to enlist the aid of the Spellguard, and I fear that they do not understand the threat posed by these ruthless and thoroughly evil adversaries. I've taken the liberty to include a copy of a recent letter I received indicating their lack of comprehension of the current situation, and perhaps to illustrate the need for us to work together on this matter.

Thane Rollo Stoneshield,

We hired you to do your job. I'm not interested in excuses, especially when the city has more important matters at hand than to kill a few Chosen.

-Field Officer Ferrington Order of the Spellguard Mages

Thane Rollo Stoneshield Stoutheart Clan Governor of Barak-Tor

You've actually been requested to cease digging below Barak-Tor, and I am still waiting a response on that letter involving the death of 25 of our citizens down there.

As for the mines Rollo, Sanctuary has not and has never claimed them. If you're dwarves can somehow protect Barak-Tor and run the mines, by all means feel free to do so.

I never expect quick results from the Council. I've come to start to rely on its inability to actually achieve anything quickly. If you can handle the mines that were abandoned, do so and none will argue with your people.

A wise course though if you ask me, is to contact the Seekers. Locate a band of slaves engaged in mining already that can bolster your numbers. You will stretch yourselves thin without additional numbers.

Lieutentant,

I must inform you that I sent a letter concerning the incident of the slain citizens last dark and it must have been misplaced by your mail clerk.

But as I try to be thorough with all of my records, I do yet have a copy, and it will only take an hour or so to make yet another copy and send it to the Watch House. Expect it forthwith.

Thane Rollo Stoneshield

*the signature is ever so slightly less neat than all of the previous impeccable examples Fawkes has seen before*

*exactly one hour later, Rollo stomps up to the Watch House and drops a letter off*

*a note is sent to Rollo*

Rollo, when you have some time, find me at the Seekers Hall and we can discuss plans to locate more ore for the city.
