A letter left for Lieutenant Fawkes at the Watch House

Dear Lieutenant Fawkes

I write to you today because I am appalled at the behaviour of one of your privates, specifically Private Welles who has threatened and insulted me, refusing to listen to reason. The incidient started when the Private walked up to me and told me to follow him to the Watch house. When asked why, he replied menacingly "Follow". Not knowing what he wanted I followed him where he lead me to a large hall in the Watch House, the room where I spoke to you last.

He then badgered me with questions that seemed to have little connection, including a deceased friend of mine named Zur and a man trying to kill me named Rahmun. We then both smelt something burn and I could swear I heard a fire somewhere in the Watch House before the Spellguard Officer Ferrington approched Welles and whispered something I could not make out into his ear. From there, after Ferrington had left, Welles asked me to stand still and tried to tap me with his guard rod, attempting to send me to prison. I stepped away and asked what the charges were, to which Welles replied I had casted in unwarded areas on several occassions, from there he attempted to arrest me again.

I kept backing away from the rod, asking when and where I had casted illegally, as I have never casted a spell without a ward. This was answered with Welles and another private whose name I did not acquire both attacking me with their swords. I was unarmed and did not provoke assault with a weapon. After I had yelled for them to stop, which they eventually did (After I was bleeding from several severe cuts I might add) they finally told me it was per orders of Officer Ferrington.

I complied and was then teleported to the jail where Welles approched the cell making the subtle threat "You're lucky I'm tired". Welles then approched the cell and searched me before immediately running off, offering no explanation. There I waited until one of the cell guards let me out before heading to the Spellguard Tower to ask Ferrington when and where I casted "illegal" magic, only to receive no reply. I wandered back to Lower Sanctuary and was once more confronted by the crass private who then said he was fining me an extortionate sum of two hundred gold pieces. I asked if Ferrington should fine me, since he seems to think I committed the crimes. I refused to pay the gold without speaking to the Officer and receiving some proof. Welles offered no compromise, simply resorted to threats before I explained the situation to him. Welles agreed to take me up to the Spellguard Tower (After hurling insults like "Bloody wench")

On route to the Spellguard Tower, I heard casting in the streets of Upper Sanctuary and asked Welles if he would follow up on this true instance of illegal spellcasting, to which he replied something like, "Shut up Wench, I don't keep this sword for looks". While we waited in the Spellguard Tower for the mysterious Officer, Welles poked me with his sword, demanding that I pay the gold. I refused again and he led me back to the Watch House and finally put me in the hands of a competent Watchman, Private Melve'lend.

He was courteous and even-handed without resorting to violence, petty threats or insults. As I explained to him my case, Welles said to Melve'lend he would have given me a "proper beating but", but trailed off before explaining why he "restrained" himself.

Melve'lend mentioned the possibility of a trial and after the crass private had left he offered me two possibilities. Wait for Ferrington or hand him the gold where he promised to follow up the matter with the Officer and return the gold if Ferrington was not able to offer a proper explanation, I agreed.

I would like to commend Melve'lend on his diplomacy, civil manner and sense of justice while I have nothing but insults for the incompetent Private Welles.

I send you this letter so you may know how your privates are performing.
