What if PCs can cast more than one vote for more than one candidate?
This might not be possible scripting wise, or even necessary, but maybe it could be made possible for characters to vote for more than one person?
Could open up more RP opportunities as candidates shill for a PC's second or third vote even if they already have a primary option that is an obvious selection.
I'd suggest three, but more might be doable as well. Vote for all the seats on the Council?
Also, perhaps the NPCs become a bit more visible on their campaign, or they hold some "event" to win votes?
Just some thoughts.

I think this was addressed before on IRC, and the thing was that it's certainly possible (even easily so) to do scripting wise, but it's something that would need to be pursued in game.
I personally liked the idea of voting against a candidate, to subtract one vote from them.

Heh, that's what my dad said at the last parliament elections here (the voting against thing). I reckon it would be useful to keep morons who are supported by morons from getting into whatever they're being voted into.
In short: Ability to vote against? YES!

Not the way a ballot works. You effectively vote "against" someone by increasing the vote count of someone else.

But TheBeggar, it is so much easier to unite people on the basis of HATING someone in particular rather than trying to get them all vote some other particular candidate whose views many of the voters might not support. Without a very organized effort where some people are forced to compromise their personal views, the votes will inevitably scatter and the hated individual might very well get through. So this

You effectively vote "against" someone by increasing the vote count of someone else.
is true
only if there are no more than two candidates, which of course is never the case in Council elections, or if there really is an organized movement such as I described above (which is rare).
Maybe the current, traditional system is desirable -- I'm not saying aye or nay to that -- but I am pointing out that you're wrong.

How many Council seats are there? Eight?
Then by voting for eight seats you are effectively voting against everyone else. Not sure if it makes scripting or tabulating more difficult, but it would make voting more interesting and give a lot more depth to a process that the DM has determined is one of the central recurring themes of the setting.
Then, PCs could effectively campaign for others NOT to vote for someone by saying, "Vote for anyone BUT Gorlack the Virginslayer".
Then Gorlack and his cronies could find out that Biff the Uberpaladin was badmouthing him, and could take action...
Or Biff's less scrupulous boyos could go after Gorlack's campaign manager Igor for saying Biff is a thrall and wants to give Sanctuarians to the Elder Brain.
Lots more RP as a result.
