disable "sneak attack"

he he. i bet the title got all you rogue players a bit excited, but no need. I am not suggesting to do away with the ability, just the little message that pops up on EVERYONES screen everytime a sneak attack is performed. It does nothing , that i know of, to enhance game play (except maybe let you know when you are with 30 feet for a ranged sneak attack) and, if you have a large group of rogues, it can be distracting. just my thought. see what you think

Hard coded, I'm quite sure.

Not possible to remove.

I would like to alter this suggestion. Can you add in a voice command / toggle command in the menu that allows you to deactivate Sneak Attack bonus damage? Sometimes you don't want that extra damage, like when you smack someone awake from a Sleep spell, or give someone a slap in the face.

I'm not sure if that's possible either! I doubt it. But maybe we could have some kind of crude toggle to make your character do minus X (X being constant) amount of damage. But I doubt that'd work very well anyway.

I want to know if I'm being sneak attacked, or if I'm sneak attacking someone.

umm not what i was looking for, but i REALLY like the idea of the toggle.. i just wanted to see the annoying and sometimes (not often) meta gamed "sneak attack" message that is displayed go away. you know. when a character performs a sneak attack and you se the message appear over there head "sneak ttack.

but i do like thge idea of the toggle, not so much the -x damage as that could cause you to do less damage than even a normal swing, but to enable/disble the sneak attack altogether

anywau, i hope this clears up what i was talking about, but it's not really a big deal, because i have not seen it be meta gamed much.. othre tha nan ooc comment to the effects of "dam thats a lot of sneaks in this party" but thats ooc anyway. thanks everyone who replied. and good dark

I'm not sure what you mean by metagamed in relation to this?

If you see someone do a sneak attack, they're either striking from stealth, behind, or aiming for a weak spot.

9Lives, he means the words SNEAK ATTACK that appear whenever a person performs a sneak attack.

At least thats what I think he means.

Yes, but that's not metagaming in the least. It's the game letting you know what you would see. If someone near you snuck up and hit someone from behind, you'd notice.

Perhaps the only time you would not want the world to notice your fine gent hit someone with a sneak attack is if you had reason to hide you were a rogue.

In the middle of a big fight, you most likely would not notice that the leather armored fighter next to you is aiming for a weak spot. If you see the term o'er his head you might start to "metagame" in thinking he, or she, may not be on the up and up.

If your rogue is stealthy, and you prefer to keep your career in hiding, keeping the notice above your head invisible to others makes sense.

But most folk are good enough not to metagame. Probably it just makes sense to realize that your character might not have noticed unless you roll a spot check for example.

Rogues can really be anything, I think you're seeing them as a sort of branded class that has a uniqueness to it.

"OMG, he cast a spell! He must be a wizard, probably studied for hours" makes sense

"OMG, he punched from behind! I've seen moves like that, only ROGUES do that! He must of studied at the great ROGUE university of Waterdeep"

Wizards have a reason to hide the fact that they are wizards, rogues don't have any specific career, they can be nearly anything from aristocrats to gutter thieves.

It is perfectly acceptable for a character to realize that you're striking at weak points, like punching someone in the kidneys, or stabbing them in the neck or eyes.

I don't think this needs to be a worry when a casual glance at the player list, when logging onto the server, inadvertantly reveals people's classes and levels.

Concerned Wizards have a reason to hide the fact that they are wizards, rogues don't have any specific career, they can be nearly anything from aristocrats to gutter thieves.

Amen to that, I love playing rogues just because of the utter versatility - so far I've done rogue characters that were scholars, nobles, merchants and in here inventors. The worst thing then is that people come about to proclaim that "ZOMG U PICKED TEH WRONG CLASS!!1!!1!!!1!ONE!!11!" - which, to say the least, is annoying, especially when the character's abilities completely reflect what he is.

For instance, that noble character had a rapier, studded leather and a foldable Gnomish crossbow, and he was complete and utter crap in combat, specifically because he'd run as soon as anything got near, and then would sneak off.

I'm unclear on why anybody would want to hide the fact that they have rogue levels. It implies absolutely nothing about your personality or ambitions. Rogues have no alignment restrictions.
