I am wondering if this is a neat idea or not. If a black dye was used on armor or a cloth suit, would the armor gain a +1 to hide?. and if White dye was applied a -1 to hide. Those aer examples and Certain bonuses to certain dyes could be neat. Like a reflective dye a +1 to spot. So on and so forth.
Subtle effects of dyes
What's a reflective dye, and why does it help you see?
It will get removed. Reflective dye should not be used on clothing.
Also if you add bonuses to dye colours, you have to go through alot of colours for different bonuses. It seems too much effort for little gain, having to hunt down all dark dyes, light dyes and so on.
This removes diversity really and makes people use certain colours.
This, also, may not make sense for every occation. "Hiding" is not always "not being seen in dark places", it may also include making yourself not noticable. Being decked out in black in a room full of people robed in white will actually hurt your ability to stay unnoticed.
I could see an expensive dark dye that can be used for "camoflage" and a "reflective" that could be used on helms and armor. Much more expensive, a few hundred gold at least-but the idea is sound.
Or perhaps something that works the same way a dyes, but isn't. Such as some form of glow in the dark algae that you can apply to clothing which then gives it the light properties? Or some animal pheromone that you smear on your clothing which makes more responsive to you.
Yes, I mean enchanted dyes that cost a few hundred that add properties to armor and such can do certain effects. I am merely saying is that a expensive and quality back dye like the Svif black cloth dye adds a hide bonus to the clothing, while wildly audacious colors remove the bonuses at the same time give you a bluff or a persuade Bonus.
((expanding upon the idea))Certain tools like spikes or caltrops spikes can be added to gloves or other weapons to give a temperary dmg bonus.((make a craft weapon check))
Animal fur can be placed beneathe boots to give them a temporary move silent check or hide bonus etc...
I think this will get players to interact with the enviroment even more causing them to actually look for animals for there skins and such.
I am gonna stop listing ideas before I spin out of control and list total nonsense.
It would make no IC sense to have an inexpensive black that didn't grant a bonus to Hide and an expensive black that did grant the bonus. "This black works as camoflage but THIS does NOT" -- say what? And if we exclude certain colors (or shades of colors) for this kind of use, then we're essentially limiting the options that PCs have to customize their looks. Not everyone wants to pay dearly just for getting a black outfit.
I am not saying a certain color, perhaps shades of gray and back, or the other darker colors. I am saying, Expansive dyes should get people certain bonuses,
Or you could just buy expensive items that give those bonuses and dye them whatever color you please.
After the reactions to my last time touching dyes, I can tell you for sure I'm not touching this.
Some things I worry about: These would have to be coded so the item remembers it got abilities from the dye. We don't want someone dying black, getting +1 hide, and then changing to red for +1 intimidate. Once the item is no longer black, it needs to lose the hide bonus.
They would need to know not to work with other abilities. Something that has built in stealth shouldn't stack with black paint.
Coding focus could benefit more elsewhere.
